The St. Michael Prayer was composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886. According to historical accounts, it was written during a period marked by concern over secularization and perceived threats to the Church’s spiritual well-being. Pope Leo XIII ordered that it be recited after Low Mass throughout the Latin Church, a practice that continued until the mid-twentieth century.

Although the prayer itself is modern, its imagery draws on much older biblical and patristic traditions that depict Michael as a heavenly warrior and protector of God’s people.
