5:1 Es weissagten aber der Prophet Haggai und der Prophet Sacharja, der Sohn Iddos, den Juden in Juda und Jerusalem im Namen des Gottes Israels, dessen Geist über ihnen war.

5:1 Now Aggeus the prophet, and Zacharias the son of Addo, prophesied to the Jews that were in Judea and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel.

5:2 Daraufhin machten sich Serubbabel, der Sohn Sealthiels, und Jesua, der Sohn Jozadaks, daran, den Bau des Gotteshauses in Jerusalem aufs neue in Angriff zu nehmen, und mit ihnen waren die (beiden) Propheten Gottes, welche sie unterstützten.

5:2 Then rose up Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, and Josue the son of Josedec, and began to build the temple of God in Jerusalem, and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

5:3 Zu jener Zeit kamen Thathnai, der Statthalter der Provinz diesseits des Euphrats, und Sethar-Bosnai und deren Genossen zu ihnen und richteten die Frage an sie: »Wer hat euch die Erlaubnis gegeben, dieses Haus zu bauen und diese Mauer wiederherzustellen,

5:3 And at the same time came to them Thathanai, who was governor beyond the river, and Stharbuzanai, and their counsellors: and said thus to them: Who hath given you counsel to build this house, and to repair the walls thereof?

5:4 und welches sind die Namen der Männer, die diesen Bau betreiben?«

5:4 In answer to which we gave them the names of the men who were the promoters of that building.

5:5 Aber das Auge ihres Gottes war auf die Ältesten der Juden gerichtet, so daß (jene) von ihnen nicht die Einstellung der Arbeit verlangten, bis ein Befehl des Darius vorläge und man ihnen dann einen schriftlichen Bescheid darüber zugehen ließe.

5:5 But the eye of their God was upon the ancients of the Jews, and they could not hinder them. And it was agreed that the matter should be referred to Darius, and then they should give satisfaction concerning that accusation.

5:6 Abschrift des Berichts, den Thathnai, der Statthalter der Provinz diesseits des Euphrats, und Sethar-Bosnai und seine Genossen, die Apharsachäer, die in der Provinz diesseits des Euphrats wohnten, an den König Darius sandten.

5:6 The copy of the letter that Thathanai governor of the country beyond the river, and Stharbuzanai, and his counsellors the Arphasachites, who dwelt beyond the river, sent to Darius the king.

5:7 Sie sandten nämlich einen Bericht an ihn, dessen Wortlaut folgender war: »Dem König Darius alles Heil!

5:7 The letter which they sent him, was written thus: To Darius the king all peace.

5:8 Es sei dem Könige zu wissen getan, daß wir uns in die Landschaft Juda zum Hause des großen Gottes begeben haben; es wird aus Quadersteinen erbaut, und in die Wände werden Balken eingelegt; diese Arbeit wird eifrig betrieben und geht unter ihren Händen erfolgreich vonstatten.

5:8 Be it known to the king, that we went to the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which they are building with unpolished stones, and timber is laid in the walls: and this work is carried on diligently and advanceth in their hands.

5:9 Da haben wir an die Ältesten dort die Frage gerichtet: ›Wer hat euch den Befehl gegeben, dieses Haus zu bauen und diese Mauer wiederherzustellen?‹

5:9 And we asked those ancients, and said to them thus: Who hath given you authority to build this house, and to repair these walls?

5:10 Und auch nach ihren Namen haben wir sie gefragt, um sie dir mitzuteilen, indem wir die Namen der Männer aufschrieben, die an ihrer Spitze stehen.

5:10 We asked also of them their names, that we might give thee notice: and we have written the names of the men that are the chief among them.

5:11 Und folgendes ist die Auskunft, die sie uns gegeben haben: ›Wir sind die Knechte des Gottes des Himmels und der Erde und bauen das Haus wieder auf, das ehedem vor vielen Jahren hier gestanden hat und das ein großer israelitischer König erbaut und aufgeführt hatte.

5:11 And they answered us in these words, saying: We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are building a temple that was built these many years ago, and which a great king of Israel built and set up.

5:12 Weil aber unsere Väter den Gott des Himmels erzürnt hatten, hat er sie der Gewalt des Königs Nebukadnezar von Babylon, des Chaldäers, preisgegeben; der hat dieses Haus zerstört und das Volk gefangen nach Babylon geführt.

5:12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he delivered them into the hands of Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon the Chaldean: and he destroyed this house, and carried away the people to Babylon.

5:13 Doch im ersten Jahre der Regierung des Königs Kores über Babylon hat der König Kores den Befehl gegeben, dieses Gotteshaus wieder aufzubauen.

5:13 But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon, king Cyrus set forth a decree, that this house of God should be built.

5:14 Auch die goldenen und silbernen Geräte des Gotteshauses, die Nebukadnezar aus dem Tempel zu Jerusalem weggenommen und in (seinen) Tempel zu Babylon gebracht hatte, hat der König Kores aus dem Tempel zu Babylon hervornehmen lassen und sie einem Manne namens Sesbazzar ausgeliefert, den er zum Statthalter (in Judäa) eingesetzt hatte,

5:14 And the vessels also of gold and silver of the temple of God, which Nabuchodonosor had taken out of the temple, that was in Jerusalem, and had brought them to the temple of Babylon, king Cyrus brought out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one Sassabasar, whom also he appointed governor,

5:15 indem er diesem auftrug: Nimm diese Geräte, gehe hin und lege sie im Tempel zu Jerusalem nieder; das Gotteshaus aber soll an seiner früheren Stelle wieder aufgebaut werden!

5:15 And said to him: Take these vessels, and go, and put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be built in its place.

5:16 Daraufhin ist der betreffende Sesbazzar hergekommen und hat den Grundstein zum Gotteshause in Jerusalem gelegt; und seit jener Zeit wird bis heute daran gebaut, es ist aber noch nicht vollendet.‹

5:16 Then came this same Sassabasar, and laid the foundations of the temple of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it is in building, and is not yet finished.

5:17 Demnach möge man, wenn es dem Könige beliebt, im königlichen Schatzhause dort in Babylon nachforschen, ob es sich wirklich so verhält, daß vom Könige Kores der Befehl gegeben worden ist, dieses Gotteshaus in Jerusalem wieder aufzubauen. Der König wolle uns dann seine Entscheidung in dieser Sache zukommen lassen.«

5:17 Now therefore if it seem good to the king, let him search in the king's library, which is in Babylon, whether it hath been decreed by Cyrus the king, that the house of God in Jerusalem should be built, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
