17:1 Da sagte Elia, der Thisbiter, aus Thisbe in Gilead, zu Ahab: »So wahr der HERR, der Gott Israels, lebt, in dessen Dienst ich stehe: es soll in den nächsten Jahren weder Tau noch Regen fallen, es sei denn auf mein Wort!«

17:1 And Elias the Thesbite, of the inhabitants of Galaad, said to Achab: As the Lord liveth, the God of Israel, in whose sight I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to the words of my mouth.

17:2 Hierauf erging das Wort des HERRN an ihn also:

17:2 And the word of the Lord came to him, saying:

17:3 »Gehe weg von hier und wende dich ostwärts und verbirg dich am Bache Krith, der östlich vom Jordan fließt.

17:3 Get thee hence, and go towards the east, and hide thyself by the torrent of Carith, which is over against the Jordan;

17:4 Aus dem Bache sollst du trinken, und den Raben habe ich geboten, dich dort mit Nahrung zu versorgen.«

17:4 And there thou shalt drink of the torrent: and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

17:5 Da ging er weg und tat nach dem Befehl des HERRN: er ging hin und ließ sich am Bache Krith nieder, der auf der Ostseite des Jordans fließt;

17:5 So he went, and did according to the word of the Lord: and going, he dwelt by the torrent Carith, which is over against the Jordan.

17:6 und die Raben brachten ihm Brot und Fleisch am Morgen und ebenso am Abend, und er trank aus dem Bache.

17:6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the torrent.

17:7 Als dann aber der Bach nach einiger Zeit trocken wurde, weil kein Regen im Lande gefallen war,

17:7 But after some time the torrent was dried up: for it had not rained upon the earth.

17:8 erging das Wort des HERRN an ihn also:

17:8 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying:

17:9 »Mache dich auf, begib dich nach Zarpath, das zu Sidon gehört, und bleibe daselbst! Ich habe einer Witwe dort geboten, für deinen Unterhalt zu sorgen.«

17:9 Arise, and go to Sarephta of the Sidonians, and dwell there: for I have commanded a widow woman there to feed thee.

17:10 Da machte er sich auf den Weg und begab sich nach Zarpath; und als er am Stadttor ankam, war dort eine Witwe gerade damit beschäftigt, Holz zusammenzulesen. Er rief sie an mit den Worten: »Hole mir doch ein wenig Wasser in einem Kruge, damit ich trinke!«

17:10 He arose, and went to Sarephta. And when he was come to the gate of the city, he saw the widow woman gathering sticks, and he called her, and said to her: Give me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

17:11 Als sie nun hinging, um es zu holen, rief er ihr die Worte nach: »Bring mir doch auch einen Bissen Brot mit!«

17:11 And when she was going to fetch it, he called after her, saying: Bring me also, I beseech thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

17:12 Aber sie antwortete: »So wahr der HERR, dein Gott, lebt! Ich besitze nichts Gebackenes; nur noch eine Handvoll Mehl ist im Topf und ein wenig Öl im Kruge. Eben lese ich ein paar Stücke Holz zusammen, dann will ich heimgehen und es für mich und meinen Sohn zubereiten, damit wir es essen und dann sterben.«

17:12 And she answered: As the Lord thy God liveth, I have no bread, but only a handful of meal in a pot, and a little oil in a cruise: behold I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it, for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.

17:13 Doch Elia antwortete ihr: »Fürchte dich nicht, gehe heim und tu, wie du gesagt hast; doch zuerst bereite mir davon einen kleinen Kuchen und bringe ihn mir her! Darnach magst du für dich und deinen Sohn auch etwas zubereiten.

17:13 And Elias said to her: Fear not; but go, and do as thou hast said but first make for me of the same meal a little hearth cake, and bring it to me, and after make for thyself and thy son.

17:14 Denn so hat der HERR, der Gott Israels, gesprochen: ›Das Mehl im Topf soll nicht ausgehen und das Öl im Kruge nicht abnehmen bis zu dem Tage, wo der HERR wieder Regen auf den Erdboden fallen läßt.‹«

17:14 For thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: The pot of meal shall not waste, nor the cruise of oil be diminished, until the day wherein the Lord will give rain upon the face of the earth.

17:15 Da ging sie hin und kam der Weisung Elias nach; und sie hatten lange Zeit zu essen, er und sie und ihr Sohn:

17:15 She went, and did according to the word of Elias: and he ate, and she, and her house: and from that day

17:16 das Mehl im Topf ging nicht aus, und das Öl im Kruge nahm nicht ab, wie der HERR es durch den Mund Elias hatte ankündigen lassen.

17:16 The pot of meal wasted not, and the cruise of oil was not diminished according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke in the hand of Elias.

17:17 Nachmals aber begab es sich, daß der Sohn jener Frau, der das Haus gehörte, krank wurde, und seine Krankheit verschlimmerte sich so, daß kein Atem mehr in ihm blieb.

17:17 And it came to pass after this, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick, and the sickness was very grievous, so that there was no breath left in him.

17:18 Da sagte sie zu Elia: »Was haben wir miteinander zu schaffen, du Mann Gottes? Du bist nur deshalb zu mir gekommen, um meine Verschuldung bei Gott in Erinnerung zu bringen und den Tod meines Sohnes herbeizuführen!«

17:18 And she said to Elias: What have I to do with thee, thou man of God? art thou come to me, that my iniquities should be remembered, and that thou shouldst kill my son?

17:19 Er antwortete ihr: »Gib mir deinen Sohn her!« Er nahm ihn dann von ihrem Schoß, trug ihn in das Obergemach hinauf, wo er selbst wohnte, und legte ihn auf sein Bett;

17:19 And Elias said to her: Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him into the upper chamber where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

17:20 dann rief er den HERRN an und betete: »HERR, mein Gott, hast du wirklich die Witwe, bei der ich zu Gast bin, so unglücklich gemacht, daß du ihren Sohn hast sterben lassen?«

17:20 And he cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord, my God, hast thou afflicted also the widow, with whom I am after a sort maintained, so as to kill her son?

17:21 Darauf streckte er sich dreimal über den Knaben hin und rief den HERRN mit den Worten an: »HERR, mein Gott, laß doch die Seele dieses Knaben wieder in ihn zurückkehren!«

17:21 And he stretched, and measured himself upon the child three times, and cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord, my God, let the soul of this child, I beseech thee, return into his body.

17:22 Da erhörte der HERR das Gebet Elias, und die Seele des Knaben kehrte in ihn zurück, so daß er wieder auflebte.

17:22 And the Lord heard the voice of Elias: and the soul of the child returned into him, and he revived.

17:23 Elia aber nahm den Knaben, trug ihn aus dem Obergemach ins Haus hinunter und übergab ihn seiner Mutter mit den Worten: »Sieh her, dein Sohn lebt!«

17:23 And Elias took the child, and brought him down from the upper chamber to the house below, and delivered him to his mother, and said to her: Behold thy son liveth.

17:24 Da antwortete die Frau dem Elia: »Ja, nun weiß ich, daß du ein Mann Gottes bist und daß das Wort des HERRN in deinem Munde Wahrheit ist!«

17:24 And the woman said to Elias: Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and the word of the Lord in thy mouth is true.
