16:1 aber im sechsunddreißigsten Regierungsjahre Asas zog Baesa, der König von Israel, gegen Juda heran und befestigte Rama, damit niemand mehr bei Asa, dem Könige von Juda, ungehindert aus- und eingehen könne.

16:1 And in the six and thirtieth year of his kingdom, Baasa the king of Israel came up against Juda, and built a wall about Rama, that no one might safely go out or come in of the kingdom of Asa.

16:2 Da nahm Asa Silber und Gold aus den Schatzkammern des Tempels des HERRN und des königlichen Palastes, sandte es an Benhadad, den König von Syrien, der zu Damaskus wohnte, und ließ ihm sagen:

16:2 Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the Lord, and of the king's treasures, and sent to Benadad king of Syria, who dwelt in Damascus, saying:

16:3 »Ein Bündnis besteht zwischen mir und dir, zwischen meinem Vater und deinem Vater! Hier sende ich dir nun Silber und Gold. So löse denn dein Bündnis mit dem König Baesa von Israel auf, damit er aus meinem Lande abzieht!«

16:3 There is a league between me and thee, as there was between my father and thy father, wherefore I have sent thee silver and gold, that thou mayst break thy league with Baasa king of Israel, and make him depart from me.

16:4 Benhadad schenkte der Aufforderung des Königs Asa Gehör und ließ seine Heerführer gegen die Städte Israels ziehen; sie eroberten Ijjon, Dan, Abel-Majim und alle Vorratshäuser in den Ortschaften Naphthalis.

16:4 And when Benadad heard this, he sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israel: and they took Ahion, and Dan, and Abelmaim, and all the walled cities of Nephtali.

16:5 Sobald nun Baesa Kunde davon erhielt, gab er die Befestigung Ramas auf und stellte seine Arbeit dort ein.

16:5 And when Baasa heard of it, he left off the building of Rama, and interrupted his work.

16:6 Der König Asa aber bot ganz Juda auf; die mußten die Steine und Balken wegschaffen, mit denen Baesa Rama hatte befestigen wollen; und er ließ dann Geba und Mizpa damit befestigen.

16:6 Then king Asa took all Juda, and they carried away from Rama the stones, and the timber that Baasa had prepared for the building: and he built with them Gabaa, and Maspha.

16:7 Zu jener Zeit aber kam der Seher Hanani zu Asa, dem König von Juda, und sagte zu ihm: »Weil du dein Vertrauen auf den König von Syrien gesetzt und dich nicht auf den HERRN, deinen Gott, verlassen hast, darum ist das Heer des Königs von Syrien der Vernichtung durch dich entgangen.

16:7 At that time Hanani the prophet came to Asa king of Juda, and said to him: Because thou hast had confidence in the king of Syria, and not in the Lord thy God, therefore hath the army of the king of Syria escaped out of thy hand.

16:8 Waren nicht die Kuschiten und Libyer eine gewaltige Heeresmacht mit Wagen und Reitern in großer Zahl? Aber weil du dein Vertrauen auf den HERRN setztest, ließ er sie in deine Gewalt fallen.

16:8 Were not the Ethiopians, and the Libyans much more numerous in chariots, and horsemen, and an exceeding great multitude: yet because thou trustedst in the Lord, he delivered them into thy hand?

16:9 Denn die Augen des HERRN überschauen die ganze Erde, damit er seine Macht zum Heil für die erweise, deren Herz ungeteilt auf ihn gerichtet ist. Du hast in diesem Fall töricht gehandelt; denn von nun an wirst du (unablässig) Kriege zu führen haben.«

16:9 For the eyes of the Lord behold all the earth, and give strength to those who with a perfect heart trust in him. Wherefore thou hast done foolishly, and for this cause from this time wars shall arise against thee.

16:10 Asa wurde über den Seher unwillig und ließ ihn ins Stockhaus werfen; denn er war wegen seines Auftretens aufgebracht gegen ihn. Gleichzeitig ging Asa auch gegen einige Leute aus dem Volke gewalttätig vor.

16:10 And Asa was angry with the seer, and commanded him to be put in prison: for he was greatly enraged because of this thing: and he put to death many of the people at that time.

16:11 Die Geschichte Asas aber von Anfang bis zu Ende findet sich bekanntlich bereits im Buch der Könige von Juda und Israel aufgezeichnet.

16:11 But the works of Asa the first and last are written in the book of the kings of Juda and Israel.

16:12 Im neununddreißigsten Jahre seiner Regierung erkrankte Asa an einem Fußleiden, und zwar in sehr ernster Weise; aber auch in (dieser) seiner Krankheit suchte er nicht beim HERRN Hilfe, sondern bei den Ärzten.

16:12 And Asa fell sick in the nine and thirtieth year of his reign, of a most violent pain in his feet, and yet in his illness he did not seek the Lord, but rather trusted in the skill of physicians.

16:13 Als er sich dann zu seinen Vätern gelegt und im einundvierzigsten Jahre seiner Regierung gestorben war,

16:13 And he slept with his fathers: and he died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.

16:14 begrub man ihn in seiner Grabstätte, die er sich in der Davidsstadt hatte aushauen lassen. Man legte ihn auf ein Lager, das man mit Spezereien aller Art und mit Wohlgerüchen von kunstgerecht hergestellten Salben angefüllt hatte, und veranstaltete ihm zu Ehren einen überaus großartigen Leichenbrand.

16:14 And they buried him in his own sepulchre, which he had made for himself in the city of David: and they laid him on his bed full of spices and odoriferous ointments, which were made by the art of the perfumers, and they burnt them over him with very great pomp.
