6:1 In diesen Tagen nun entstand bei der Zunahme der Zahl der Jünger laute Unzufriedenheit der Hellenisten gegen die Hebräer, weil ihre Witwen bei der täglichen Verpflegung nicht genügend berücksichtigt würden.

6:1 And in those days, the number of the disciples increasing, there arose a murmuring of the Greeks against the Hebrews, for that their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

6:2 So beriefen denn die Zwölf die Gesamtheit der Jünger und sagten: »Es scheint uns nicht das Richtige zu sein, daß wir die Verkündigung des Wortes Gottes hintansetzen, um den Tischdienst zu besorgen.

6:2 Then the twelve, calling together the multitude of the disciples, said: It is not reason that we should leave the word of God and serve tables.

6:3 So seht euch nun, ihr Brüder, nach sieben bewährten, mit Geist und Weisheit erfüllten Männern aus eurer Mitte um, damit wir sie zu diesem Dienst bestellen;

6:3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

6:4 wir selbst aber wollen uns ausschließlich dem Gebet und dem Dienst am Wort widmen.«

6:4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.

6:5 Dieser Vorschlag fand den Beifall der ganzen Versammlung, und man wählte Stephanus, einen Mann voll Glaubens und heiligen Geistes, ferner den Philippus, Prochorus, Nikanor, Timon, Parmenas und Nikolaus, einen Judengenossen aus Antiochia.

6:5 And the saying was liked by all the multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip and Prochorus and Nicanor, and Timon and Parmenas and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch.

6:6 Diese Männer ließ man vor die Apostel hintreten, die (für sie) beteten und ihnen die Hände auflegten.

6:6 These they set before the apostles: and they praying, imposed hands upon them.

6:7 Das Wort Gottes breitete sich nun immer weiter aus, und die Zahl der Jünger vermehrte sich in Jerusalem stark; sogar eine große Menge von Priestern wurde dem Glauben gehorsam.

6:7 And the word of the Lord increased: and the number of the disciples was multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly. A great multitude also of the priests obeyed the faith.

6:8 Stephanus aber, ein Mann voll Gnade und Geisteskraft, tat Wunder und große Zeichen unter dem Volke.

6:8 And Stephen, full of grace and fortitude, did great wonders and signs among the people.

6:9 Da traten einige Mitglieder der sogenannten Synagoge der Freigelassenen sowie der Cyrenäer und Alexandriner und der Synagogen der Cilicier und der Provinz Asien auf und führten mit Stephanus Streitgespräche,

6:9 Now there arose some, of that which is called the synagogue of the Libertines and of the Cyrenians and of the Alexandrians and of them that were of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen.

6:10 vermochten jedoch gegen die Weisheit und den Geist, mit dem er redete, nicht aufzukommen.

6:10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit that spoke.

6:11 Infolgedessen stifteten sie Männer an, die aussagen mußten: »Wir haben ihn Lästerworte gegen Mose und gegen Gott aussprechen hören.«

6:11 Then they suborned men to say they had heard him speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.

6:12 So wiegelten sie denn das Volk sowie die Ältesten und die Schriftgelehrten auf, fielen dann über ihn her, schleppten ihn mit sich und führten ihn vor den Hohen Rat.

6:12 And they stirred up the people and the ancients and the scribes. And running together, they took him and brought him to the council.

6:13 Hier ließen sie falsche Zeugen auftreten, die aussagten: »Dieser Mensch hört nicht auf, Reden gegen die heilige Stätte hier und das Gesetz zu führen.

6:13 And they set up false witnesses, who said: This man ceaseth not to speak words against the holy place and the law.

6:14 So haben wir ihn sagen hören: ›Dieser Jesus von Nazareth wird diese Stätte zerstören und die Gebräuche abändern, die Mose uns verordnet hat.‹«

6:14 For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place and shall change the traditions which Moses delivered unto us.

6:15 Als nun alle, die im Hohen Rate saßen, ihre Blicke gespannt auf ihn richteten, sahen sie sein Antlitz (verklärt) wie das Angesicht eines Engels.

6:15 And all that sat in the council, looking on him, saw his face as if it had been the face of an angel.
