22:1 If a thief be found breaking open a house or undermining it, and be wounded so as to die: he that slew him shall not be guilty of blood.

22:2 But if he did this when the sun is risen, he hath committed murder, and he shall die. If he have not wherewith to make restitution for the theft, he shall be sold.

22:3 Wird das gestohlene Tier, es sei ein Rind oder ein Esel oder ein Stück Kleinvieh, noch lebend in seinem Besitz vorgefunden, so soll er nur doppelten Ersatz leisten;

22:3 If that which he stole be found with him, alive, either ox, or ass, or sheep: he shall restore double.

22:4 Läßt jemand ein Feld oder einen Baumgarten abweiden und sein Vieh dabei frei laufen, so daß es auf dem Felde eines andern weidet, so hat er mit dem besten Ertrage seines Feldes und mit dem besten Ertrage seines Baumgartens Ersatz zu leisten. –

22:4 If any man hurt a field or a vineyard, and put in his beast to feed upon that which is other men's: he shall restore the best of whatsoever he hath in his own field, or in his vineyard, according to the estimation of the damage.

22:5 Wenn Feuer ausbricht und Dornhecken ergreift und es wird ein Garbenhaufen oder das auf dem Halm stehende Getreide oder das Feld dadurch verbrannt, so soll der, welcher den Brand verursacht hat, den Schaden ersetzen.«

22:5 If a fire breaking out light upon thorns, and catch stacks of corn, or corn standing in the fields, he that kindled the fire shall make good the loss.

22:6 »Wenn jemand einem andern Geld oder Wertsachen zur Aufbewahrung übergibt und es wird dies aus dem Hause des Betreffenden gestohlen, so hat der Dieb, wenn er ausfindig gemacht wird, doppelten Ersatz zu leisten.

22:6 If a man deliver money, or any vessel unto his friend to keep, and they be stolen away from him that received them: if the thief be found, he shall restore double:

22:7 Wird aber der Dieb nicht ausfindig gemacht, so soll der Besitzer des Hauses vor Gott hintreten, damit festgestellt wird, ob er sich nicht an dem Eigentum des andern vergriffen hat! –

22:7 If the thief be not known, the master of the house shall be brought to the gods, and shall swear that he did not lay his hand upon his neighbour's goods,

22:8 Bei jedem Fall von Veruntreuung, mag es sich um ein Rind, einen Esel, ein Stück Kleinvieh, ein Kleidungsstück, kurz um irgend etwas abhanden Gekommenes handeln, wovon jemand behauptet, daß es sein Eigentum sei, soll die Angelegenheit beider vor Gott kommen, und wen Gott für schuldig erklärt, der soll dem andern doppelten Ersatz leisten. –

22:8 To do any fraud, either in ox, or in ass, or sheep, or raiment, or any thing that may bring damage: the cause of both parties shall come to the gods: and if they give judgment, he shall restore double to his neighbour.

22:9 Wenn jemand einem andern einen Esel oder ein Rind oder ein Stück Kleinvieh oder sonst irgendein Stück Vieh zur Hut übergibt und dieses zu Tode oder zu Schaden kommt oder geraubt wird, ohne daß jemand es gesehen hat,

22:9 If a man deliver ass, ox, sheep, or any beast, to his neighbour's custody, and it die, or be hurt, or be taken by enemies, and no man saw it:

22:10 so soll ein Eid bei Gott zwischen den beiden Parteien entscheiden, ob der Betreffende sich nicht am Eigentum des andern vergriffen hat. Der Eigentümer des Tieres muß dann den Verlust hinnehmen, und (der andere) braucht keinen Ersatz zu leisten.

22:10 There shall be an oath between them, that he did not put forth his hand to his neighbour's goods: and the owner shall accept of the oath, and he shall not be compelled to make restitution.

22:11 Ist es ihm aber wirklich gestohlen worden, so hat er dem Eigentümer Ersatz zu leisten.

22:11 But if it were taken away by stealth, he shall make the loss good to the owner.

22:12 Ist es dagegen (von einem Raubtier) zerrissen worden, so mag er das zerrissene Tier zum Beweis beibringen: für das Zerrissene braucht er keinen Ersatz zu leisten. –

22:12 If it were eaten by a beast, let him bring to him that which was slain, and he shall not make restitution.

22:13 Wenn ferner jemand ein Stück Vieh von einem andern entlehnt hat und dieses zu Schaden oder zu Tode kommt, so muß er, wenn sein Eigentümer nicht zugegen war, unweigerlich Ersatz leisten;

22:13 If a man borrow of his neighbour any of these things, and it be hurt or die, the owner not being present, he shall be obliged to make restitution.

22:14 war jedoch der Eigentümer zugegen, so braucht er keinen Ersatz zu leisten. Wenn das Tier (um Geld) gemietet war, so ist der Schaden in dem Mietgeld eingeschlossen.«

22:14 But if the owner be present, he shall not make restitution, especially if it were hired, and came for the hire of his work.

22:15 »Wenn jemand eine Jungfrau verführt, die noch nicht verlobt ist, und ihr beiwohnt, so muß er sie sich durch Erlegung der Heiratsgabe zur Ehefrau erkaufen.

22:15 If a man seduce a virgin not yet espoused, and lie with her: he shall endow her, and have her to wife.

22:16 Wenn ihr Vater sich aber durchaus weigert, sie ihm zu geben, so soll er das als Heiratsgabe für Jungfrauen übliche Kaufgeld bezahlen.«

22:16 If the maid's father will not give her to him, he shall give money according to the dowry, which virgins are wont to receive.

22:17 Eine Zauberin sollst du nicht am Leben lassen. –

22:17 Wizards thou shalt not suffer to live.

22:18 Wer einem Tiere beiwohnt, soll mit dem Tode bestraft werden. –

22:18 Whosoever copulateth with a beast; shall be put to death.

22:19 Wer den Göttern opfert außer dem HERRN allein, soll dem Bann verfallen.

22:19 He that sacrificeth to gods, shall be put to death, save only to the Lord.

22:20 Einen Fremdling sollst du nicht übervorteilen und nicht bedrücken; denn ihr selbst seid Fremdlinge im Land Ägypten gewesen. –

22:20 Thou shalt not molest a stranger, nor afflict him: for yourselves also were strangers in the land of Egypt.

22:21 Keine Witwe oder Waise sollt ihr bedrücken.

22:21 You shall not hurt a widow or an orphan.

22:22 Wenn du sie irgendwie bedrückst und sie dann zu mir schreien, so werde ich ihr Schreien gewißlich erhören,

22:22 If you hurt them, they will cry out to me, and I will hear their cry:

22:23 und mein Zorn wird entbrennen, und ich werde euch durch das Schwert sterben lassen, so daß eure Frauen zu Witwen und eure Kinder zu Waisen werden. –

22:23 And my rage shall be enkindled, and I will strike you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

22:24 Wenn du jemandem aus meinem Volk, einem Armen, der neben dir wohnt, Geld leihst, so sollst du dich nicht als Wucherer gegen ihn benehmen: ihr sollt keine Zinsen von ihm fordern. –

22:24 If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor, that dwelleth with thee, thou shalt not be hard upon them as an extortioner, nor oppress them with usuries.

22:25 Wenn du dir von einem andern den Mantel als Pfand geben läßt, so sollst du ihm diesen bis zum Sonnenuntergang zurückgeben;

22:25 If thou take of thy neighbour a garment in pledge, thou shalt give it him again before sunset.

22:26 denn das ist seine einzige Decke, die einzige Hülle für seinen Leib: worauf soll er sonst beim Schlafen liegen? Wenn er zu mir schriee, so würde ich ihn erhören; denn ich bin gnädig. –

22:26 For that same is the only thing, wherewith he is covered, the clothing of his body, neither hath he any other to sleep in: if he cry to me, I will hear him, because I am compassionate.

22:27 Gott sollst du nicht lästern und einem Fürsten in deinem Volk nicht fluchen. –

22:27 Thou shalt not speak ill of the gods, and the prince of thy people thou shalt not curse.

22:28 Mit der Abgabe von dem Überfluß deiner Tenne und von dem Abfluß deiner Kelter sollst du nicht zögern. – Den Erstgeborenen deiner Söhne sollst du mir geben.

22:28 Thou shalt not delay to pay thy tithes and thy firstfruits: thou shalt give the firstborn of thy sons to me.

22:29 Ebenso sollst du es mit deinen Rindern und deinem Kleinvieh halten! Sieben Tage soll (das Erstgeborene) bei seiner Mutter bleiben, und am achten Tage sollst du es mir darbringen. –

22:29 Thou shalt do the same with the firstborn of thy oxen also and sheep: seven days let it be with its dam: the eighth day thou shalt give it to me.

22:30 Heilige Männer sollt ihr mir sein und Fleisch von einem auf dem Feld zerrissenen Tiere nicht essen: den Hunden sollt ihr es vorwerfen.«

22:30 You shall be holy men to me: the flesh that beasts have tasted of before, you shall not eat, but shall cast it to the dogs.
