22:1 Da nahm Eliphas von Theman das Wort und sagte:

22:1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:

22:2 »Kann wohl ein Mensch Gott Nutzen schaffen? Nein, nur sich selbst nützt der Fromme.

22:2 Can man be compared with God, even though he were of perfect knowledge?

22:3 Hat der Allmächtige Vorteil davon, wenn du rechtschaffen bist? Oder bringt es ihm Gewinn, wenn du unsträflich wandelst?

22:3 What doth it profit God if thou be just? or what dost thou give him if thy way be unspotted?

22:4 Meinst du, wegen deiner Gottesfurcht strafe er dich und gehe deshalb mit dir ins Gericht?

22:4 Shall he reprove thee for fear, and come with thee into judgment:

22:5 Ist nicht vielmehr deine Bosheit groß, und sind nicht deine Verschuldungen ohne Ende?«

22:5 And not for thy manifold wickedness and thy infinite iniquities?

22:6 »Denn oftmals hast du deine Volksgenossen ohne Grund gepfändet und den Halbnackten ihre Kleider ausziehen lassen;

22:6 For thou hast taken away the pledge of thy brethren without cause, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

22:7 dem vor Durst Lechzenden hast du keinen Trunk Wasser gereicht und dem Hungrigen ein Stück Brot versagt.

22:7 Thou hast not given water to the weary, thou hast withdrawn bread from the hungry.

22:8 Dem Manne der Faust – ihm gehörte das Land, und nur die Hochangesehenen durften darin wohnen.

22:8 In the strength of thy arm thou didst possess the land, and being the most mighty thou holdest it.

22:9 Witwen ließest du mit leeren Händen gehen, und alles, was den Waisen zu Gebote stand, wurde zugrunde gerichtet.

22:9 Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless thou hast broken in pieces.

22:10 Darum bist du jetzt rings von Schlingen umgeben, und jäher Schrecken versetzt dich in Angst;

22:10 Therefore art thou surrounded with shares, and sudden fear troubleth thee.

22:11 dein Licht ist Finsternis geworden, so daß du nicht sehen kannst, und eine Wasserflut bedeckt dich.«

22:11 And didst thou think that thou shouldst not see darkness, and that thou shouldst not be covered with the violence of overflowing waters?

22:12 »Ist Gott nicht so hoch wie der Himmel? Und schaue den Gipfel der Sterne an, wie hoch sie ragen!

22:12 Dost not thou think that God is higher than heaven, and is elevated above the height of the stars?

22:13 Und da sagst du: ›Was weiß denn Gott? Kann er durch Wolkendunkel hindurch Gericht halten?

22:13 And thou sayest: What doth God know? and he judgeth as it were through a mist.

22:14 Dichte Wolken sind ihm eine Hülle, so daß er nichts sehen kann, und nur die Räume des Himmelsgewölbes durchwandelt er.‹

22:14 The clouds are his covert, and he doth not consider our things, and he walketh about the poles of heaven.

22:15 Willst du die Bahn der Vorwelt innehalten, auf der die Männer des Frevels einst gewandelt sind?

22:15 Dost thou desire to keep the path of ages, which wicked men have trodden?

22:16 Sie, die vor der Zeit weggerafft wurden – der feste Boden unter ihnen zerfloß zu einem Strom –;

22:16 Who were taken away before their time, and a flood hath overthrown their foundation.

22:17 die zu Gott sagten: ›Bleibe fern von uns!‹ und ›was der Allmächtige ihnen antun könne?‹

22:17 Who said to God: Depart from us: and looked upon the Almighty as if he could do nothing:

22:18 Und doch hatte er ihre Häuser mit Segen gefüllt. Aber die Denkweise der Frevler bleibe fern von mir!

22:18 Whereas he had filled their houses with good things: whose way of thinking be far from me.

22:19 Die Gerechten sehen es und freuen sich, und der Schuldlose ruft ihnen spottend zu:

22:19 The just shall see, and shall rejoice, and the innocent shall laugh them to scorn.

22:20 ›Fürwahr, unsere Widersacher sind vernichtet, und ihre Hinterlassenschaft hat das Feuer verzehrt!‹«

22:20 Is not their exaltation cut down, and hath not fire devoured the remnants of them?

22:21 »Befreunde dich doch mit Gott und halte Frieden mit ihm! Dadurch wird dein Geschick sich heilsam gestalten.

22:21 Submit thyself then to him, and be at peace: and thereby thou shalt have the best fruits.

22:22 Nimm doch Belehrung aus seinem Munde an und laß seine Worte in deinem Herzen wohnen!

22:22 Receive the law of his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.

22:23 Wenn du dich zum Allmächtigen bekehrst, so wirst du wieder aufgebaut werden; wenn du die Sünde aus deinen Zelten entfernst –

22:23 If thou wilt return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, and shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacle.

22:24 ja, wirf das Golderz von dir in den Staub und Ophirs Gold unter die Kiesel der Bäche,

22:24 He shall give for earth flint, and for flint torrents of gold.

22:25 daß der Allmächtige dein Golderz ist und Silber dir sein Gesetz –:

22:25 And the Almighty shall be against thy enemies, and silver shall be heaped together for thee.

22:26 ja, dann wirst du dich auf den Allmächtigen getrost verlassen und zu Gott dein Angesicht vertrauensvoll erheben.

22:26 Then shalt thou abound in delights in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face to God.

22:27 Flehst du zu ihm, so wird er dich erhören, und deine Gelübde wirst du bezahlen können;

22:27 Thou shalt pray to him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay vows.

22:28 nimmst du dir etwas vor, so wird es dir gelingen, und Licht wird über deinen Wegen strahlen.

22:28 Thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall come to thee, and light shall shine in thy ways.

22:29 Wenn sie abwärts führen, so rufst du: ›Empor!‹, und dem Niedergeschlagenen hilft er auf.

22:29 For he that hath been humbled, shall be in glory: and he that shall bow down his eyes, he shall be saved.

22:30 Selbst den Nichtschuldlosen wird er entkommen lassen, und zwar wird er durch die Reinheit deiner Hände entkommen.«

22:30 The innocent shall be saved, and he shall be saved by the cleanness of his hands.
