28:1 »Denn wohl gibt es für das Silber einen Fundort und eine Stätte für das Golderz, wo man es auswäscht.

28:1 Silver hath beginnings of its veins, and gold hath a place wherein it is melted.

28:2 Eisen wird aus der Erde herausgeholt, und Gestein schmelzt man zu Kupfer um.

28:2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and stone melted with heat is turned into brass.

28:3 Der Finsternis hat (der Mensch) ein Ziel gesetzt, und bis in die äußersten Tiefen durchforscht das in Nacht und Grauen verborgene Gestein.

28:3 He hath set a time for darkness, and the end of all things he considereth, the stone also that is in the dark and the shadow of death.

28:4 Man bricht einen Stollen fern von den im Licht Wohnenden; vergessen und fern vom Fuß der über ihnen Hinschreitenden hangen sie da (an Seilen), fern von den Menschen schweben sie.

28:4 The flood divideth from the people that are on their journey, those whom the food of the needy man hath forgotten, and who cannot be come at.

28:5 Die Erde, aus welcher Brotkorn hervorwächst, wird in der Tiefe umgewühlt wie mit Feuer.

28:5 The land, out of which bread grew in its place, hath been overturned with fire.

28:6 Man findet Saphir im Gestein und Staub, darin Gold ist.

28:6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and the clods of it are gold.

28:7 Den Pfad dorthin kennt der Adler nicht, und das Auge des Falken hat ihn nicht erspäht;

28:7 The bird hath not known the path, neither hath the eye of the vulture beheld it.

28:8 nicht betreten ihn die stolzen Raubtiere, noch schreitet der Leu auf ihm einher.

28:8 The children of the merchants have not trodden it, neither hath the lioness passed by it.

28:9 An das harte Gestein legt (der Mensch) seine Hand, wühlt die Berge um von der Wurzel aus;

28:9 He hath stretched forth his hand to the flint, he hath overturned mountains from the roots.

28:10 in die Felsen bricht er Schächte, und allerlei Kostbares erblickt sein Auge.

28:10 In the rocks he hath cut out rivers, and his eye hath seen every precious thing.

28:11 Die Wasseradern verbaut er, daß sie nicht durchsickern, und zieht so die verborgenen Schätze ans Licht hervor.«

28:11 The depths also of rivers he hath searched, and hidden things he hath brought forth to light.

28:12 »Die Weisheit aber – wo findet man diese? und wo ist die Fundstätte der Erkenntnis?

28:12 But where is wisdom to be found, and where is the place of understanding?

28:13 Kein Mensch kennt den Weg zu ihr, und im Lande der Lebendigen ist sie nicht zu finden.

28:13 Man knoweth not the price thereof, neither is it found in the land of them that live in delights.

28:14 Die Flut der Tiefe sagt: ›In mir ist sie nicht‹; und das Meer erklärt: ›Bei mir weilt sie nicht‹.

28:14 The depth saith: It is not in me: and the sea saith: It is not with me.

28:15 Für geläutertes Gold ist sie nicht feil, und Silber kann nicht als Kaufpreis für sie dargewogen werden;

28:15 The finest gold shall not purchase it, neither shall silver be weighed in exchange for it.

28:16 sie läßt sich nicht aufwägen mit Feingold von Ophir, mit kostbarem Onyx und Saphir.

28:16 It shall not be compared with the dyed colours of India, or with the most precious stone sardonyx, or the sapphire.

28:17 Gold und Prachtglas kann man ihr nicht gleichstellen, noch sie eintauschen gegen Kunstwerke von gediegenem Gold;

28:17 Gold or crystal cannot equal it, neither shall any vessels of gold be changed for it.

28:18 Korallen und Kristall kommen (neben ihr) nicht in Betracht, und der Besitz der Weisheit ist mehr wert als Perlen.

28:18 High and eminent things shall not be mentioned in comparison of it: but wisdom is drawn out of secret places.

28:19 Äthiopiens Topas reicht nicht an sie heran, mit reinstem Feingold wird sie nicht aufgewogen.

28:19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be equal to it, neither shall it be compared to the cleanest dyeing.

28:20 Die Weisheit also – woher kommt sie, und wo ist die Fundstätte der Erkenntnis?

28:20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?

28:21 Verborgen ist sie vor den Augen aller lebenden Wesen und verhüllt sogar vor den Vögeln des Himmels.

28:21 It is hid from the eyes of all living, and the fowls of the air know it not.

28:22 Die Unterwelt und das Totenreich sagen von ihr: ›Nur ein Gerücht von ihr ist uns zu Ohren gedrungen.‹«

28:22 Destruction and death have said: With our ears we have heard the fame thereof.

28:23 »Gott hat den Weg zu ihr (allein) erschaut, und er kennt ihre Fundstätte;

28:23 God understandeth the way of it, and he knoweth the place thereof.

28:24 denn er blickt bis zu den Enden der Erde und sieht, was unter dem ganzen Himmel ist.

28:24 For he beholdeth the ends of the world: and looketh on all things that are under heaven.

28:25 Als er dem Winde seine Wucht bestimmte und die Wasser mit dem Maß abwog,

28:25 Who made a weight for the winds, and weighed the waters by measure.

28:26 als er dem Regen sein Gesetz vorschrieb und dem Wetterstrahl die Bahn anwies:

28:26 When he gave a law for the rain, and a way for the sounding storms.

28:27 da sah er sie und betätigte sie, setzte sie ein und erforschte sie auch.

28:27 Then he saw it, and declared, and prepared, and searched it.

28:28 Zu dem Menschen aber sprach er: ›Wisse wohl: die Furcht vor dem Allherrn – das ist Weisheit, und das Böse meiden – das ist Verstand!‹«

28:28 And he said to man: Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom: and to depart from evil, is understanding.
