6:1 Gib dich nicht völlig dem Willen deiner Leidenschaft hin, damit sie nicht wie ein Stier deine Kraft abweide.

6:1 Instead of a friend become not an enemy to thy neighbour: for an evil man shall inherit reproach and shame, so shall every sinner that is envious and double tongued.

6:2 Deine Blätter wird sie abfressen und deine Früchte verzehren und dich stehen lassen wie einen dürren Baum (g).

6:2 Extol not thyself in the thoughts of thy soul like a bull: lest thy strength be quashed by folly,

6:3 Böse Leidenschaft richtet ihren Besitzer zugrunde und macht ihn zur Schadenfreude (oder zum Gespött) seiner Feinde.

6:3 And it eat up thy leaves, and destroy thy fruit, and thou be left as a dry tree in the wilderness.

6:4 Eine freundlich redende Kehle gewinnt viele Freunde, und eine wohlredende Zunge bekommt viele Heilsgrüße (oder Friedenswünsche).

6:4 For a wicked soul shall destroy him that hath it, and maketh him to be a joy to his enemies, and shall lead him into the lot of the wicked.

6:5 Groß sei die Zahl derer, die in Frieden mit dir leben, aber dein Vertrauter sei nur einer von tausend.

6:5 A sweet word multiplieth friends, and appeaseth enemies, and a gracious tongue in a good man aboundeth.

6:6 Erwirbst du dir einen Freund, so erwirb ihn unter Erprobung und schenke ihm nicht zu schnell dein Vertrauen.

6:6 Be in peace with many, but let one of a thousand be thy counsellor.

6:7 Denn mancher ist ein Freund, solange es ihm zusagt, und bleibt es nicht zur Zeit deines Unglücks;

6:7 If thou wouldst get a friend, try him before thou takest him, and do not credit him easily.

6:8 und mancher Freund verwandelt sich in einen Feind und bringt den dich entehrenden Streit unter die Leute.

6:8 For there is a friend for his own occasion, and he will not abide in the day of thy trouble.

6:9 Und mancher ist ein Freund als Tischgenosse, ist aber nicht zu finden zur Zeit deines Unglücks;

6:9 And there is a friend that turneth to enmity; and there is a friend that will disclose hatred and strife and reproaches.

6:10 solange es dir gut geht, stellt er sich dir völlig gleich und tritt deinem Gesinde gegenüber als Herr auf (h);

6:10 And there is a friend a companion at the table, and he will not abide in the day of distress.

6:11 kommst du aber herunter, so tritt er gegen dich und läßt sich vor deinen Augen nicht mehr sehen.

6:11 A friend if he continue steadfast, shall be to thee as thyself, and shall act with confidence among them of thy household.

6:12 Von deinen Feinden halte dich fern, und vor deinen Freunden sei auf der Hut.

6:12 If he humble himself before thee, and hide himself from thy face, thou shalt have unanimous friendship for good.

6:13 Ein treuer Freund ist ein starker Schutz; wer ihn gefunden, hat einen Schatz gefunden.

6:13 Separate thyself from thy enemies, and take heed of thy friends.

6:14 Ein treuer Freund ist nicht zu bezahlen, und sein Wert läßt sich auf der Wage nicht feststellen.

6:14 A faithful friend is a strong defence: and he that hath found him, hath found a treasure.

6:15 Ein treuer Freund ist eine lebenspendende Arznei, und wer den Herrn fürchtet, erlangt ihn.

6:15 Nothing can be compared to a faithful friend, and no weight of gold and silver is able to countervail the goodness of his fidelity.

6:16 Der Gottesfürchtige lenkt seine Freundschaft richtig, denn so, wie er selbst, ist auch sein Genosse.

6:16 A faithful friend is the medicine of life and immortality: and they that fear the Lord, shall find him.

6:17 Mein Sohn, von Jugend auf erwähle dir Zucht, so wirst du bis ins Greisenalter die Weisheit gewinnen;

6:17 He that feareth God, shall likewise have good friendship: because according to him shall his friend be.

6:18 wie der Pflüger und der Sämann tritt an sie heran, so darfst du auf ihre herrlichen Früchte hoffen; denn von der Beschäftigung mit ihr wirst du nur kurze Zeit Mühe haben und bald schon ihre Früchte genießen.

6:18 My son, from thy youth up receive instruction, and even to thy grey hairs thou shalt find wisdom.

6:19 Wie so ganz ungangbar erscheint sie den Ungebildeten, und ein Unverständiger hält es bei ihr nicht aus;

6:19 Come to her as one that plougheth, and soweth, and wait for her good fruits:

6:20 wie ein Übungsstein lastet sie schwer auf ihm und es währt nicht lange, so wirft er sie weg;

6:20 For in working about her thou shalt labour a little, and shalt quickly eat of her fruits.

6:21 denn die Weisheit ist, wie schon ihr Name besagt, und nicht vielen ist sie offenbar; (denen aber, die sie kennen, verbleibt sie, bis sie Gott schauen).

6:21 How very unpleasant is wisdom to the unlearned, and the unwise will not continue with her.

6:22 Höre, mein Sohn, und nimm meine Meinung an und weise meinen Rat nicht ab;

6:22 She shall be to them as a mighty stone of trial, and they will cast her from them before it be long.

6:23 und stecke deine Füße in ihre Fesseln hinein und deinen Hals in ihr Halseisen;

6:23 For the wisdom of doctrine is according to her name, and she is not manifest unto many, but with them to whom she is known, she continueth even to the sight of God.

6:24 beuge deinen Rücken unter sie und nimm sie auf dich und sträube dich nicht gegen ihre Bande.

6:24 Give ear, my son, and take wise counsel, and cast not away my advice.

6:25 Mit ganzem Herzen tritt an sie heran und halte ihre Wege mit all deiner Kraft ein.

6:25 Put thy feet into her fetters, and thy neck into her chains:

6:26 Spüre ihr nach und suche sie, so wird sie dir bekannt werden, und hast du sie ergriffen, so laß sie nicht wieder los;

6:26 Bow down thy shoulder, and bear her, and be not grieved with her bands.

6:27 denn zuletzt wirst du Erquickung (oder Ruhe) bei ihr finden, und sie wird sich dir in Freude verwandeln.

6:27 Come to her with all thy mind, and keep her ways with all thy power.

6:28 Alsdann werden ihre Fesseln zum starken Schutz für dich werden und ihr Halseisen zu einem Prachtgewand (oder Ehrenkleid):

6:28 Search for her, and she shall be made known to thee, and when thou hast gotten her, let her not go:

6:29 denn ein goldener Schmuck ist an ihr (oder auf ihrem Haupte?), und ihre Bande sind ein Purpurgewebe.

6:29 For in the latter end thou shalt find rest in her, and she shall be turned to thy joy.

6:30 Als Prachtgewand wirst du sie dir anlegen und als Freudenkrone sie dir aufs Haupt setzen.

6:30 Then shall her fetters be a strong defence for thee, and a firm foundation, and her chain a robe of glory:

6:31 Wenn du bereit bist, mein Sohn, so wirst du Unterweisung erhalten, und wenn du dein Herz darauf richtest, so wirst du klug werden;

6:31 For in her is the beauty of life, and her bands are a healthful binding.

6:32 wenn du mit Lust und Liebe zuhörst, so wirst du es in dich aufnehmen, und wenn du dein Ohr hinkehrst, wirst du weise werden.

6:32 Thou shalt put her on as a robe of glory, and thou shalt set her upon thee as a crown of joy.

6:33 Wo viele Greise versammelt sind, da stelle dich ein, und wer weise ist, dem schließe dich an;

6:33 My son, if thou wilt attend to me, thou shalt learn: and if thou wilt apply thy mind, thou shalt be wise.

6:34 jeden Vortrag über göttliche Dinge höre gern an, und einsichtsvolle Sprüche laß dir nicht entgehen;

6:34 If thou wilt incline thy ear, thou shalt receive instruction: and if thou love to hear, thou shalt be wise.

6:35 siehst du einen verständigen Mann, so suche ihn schon frühmorgens auf, und dein Fuß betrete immer wieder die Schwellen seiner Türen.

6:35 Stand in the multitude of ancients that are wise, and join thyself from thy heart to their wisdom, that thou mayst hear every discourse of God, and the sayings of praise may not escape thee.

6:36 Denke nach über die Verordnungen des Herrn, und über seine Gebote sinne allezeit nach; er ist’s der dein Herz fest machen wird, und dein Verlangen nach Weisheit wird dir gewährt werden (h).

6:36 And if thou see a man of understanding, go to him early in the morning, and let thy foot wear the steps of his doors.

6:37 Let thy thoughts be upon the precepts of God, and meditate continually on his commandments: and he will give thee a heart, and the desire of wisdom shall be given to thee.
