5:1 Hierauf fand ein Fest der Juden statt, und Jesus zog nach Jerusalem hinauf.

5:1 After these things was a festival day of the Jews: and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

5:2 Nun liegt in Jerusalem am Schaftor ein Teich, der auf hebräisch Bethesda heißt und fünf Hallen hat.

5:2 Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches.

5:3 In diesen lagen Kranke in großer Zahl, Blinde, Lahme und Schwindsüchtige [die auf die Bewegung des Wassers warteten.

5:3 In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered: waiting for the moving of the water.

5:4 Ein Engel des Herrn stieg nämlich von Zeit zu Zeit in den Teich hinab und setzte das Wasser in Bewegung. Wer dann nach der Bewegung des Wassers zuerst hineinstieg, der wurde gesund, gleichviel mit welchem Leiden er behaftet war].

5:4 And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water was made whole of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.

5:5 Nun lag dort ein Mann, der schon achtunddreißig Jahre an seiner Krankheit gelitten hatte.

5:5 And there was a certain man there that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity.

5:6 Als Jesus diesen daliegen sah und erfuhr, daß er schon so lange Zeit als Kranker dort zugebracht hatte, fragte er ihn: »Willst du gesund werden?«

5:6 Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole?

5:7 Der Kranke antwortete ihm: »Ach, Herr, ich habe keinen Menschen, der mich in den Teich schafft, wenn das Wasser in Bewegung gerät; während ich aber hingehe, steigt immer schon ein anderer vor mir hinab.«

5:7 The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me.

5:8 Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Steh auf, nimm dein Bett auf dich und bewege dich frei!«

5:8 Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed and walk.

5:9 Da wurde der Mann sogleich gesund, nahm sein Bett auf sich und ging umher. Es war aber (gerade) Sabbat an jenem Tage.

5:9 And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed and walked. And it was the sabbath that day.

5:10 Daher sagten die Juden zu dem Geheilten: »Heute ist Sabbat; da darfst du das Bett nicht tragen!«

5:10 The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath. It is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.

5:11 Doch er antwortete ihnen: »Der Mann, der mich gesund gemacht hat, der hat zu mir gesagt: ›Nimm dein Bett auf dich und bewege dich frei!‹«

5:11 He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me: Take up thy bed and walk.

5:12 Sie fragten ihn: »Wer ist der Mann, der zu dir gesagt hat: ›Nimm es auf dich und gehe umher!‹?«

5:12 They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee: Take up thy bed and walk?

5:13 Der Geheilte wußte aber nicht, wer es war; denn Jesus hatte sich in der Menschenmenge, die sich an dem Orte befand, unbemerkt entfernt.

5:13 But he who was healed knew not who it was: for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place.

5:14 Später traf Jesus ihn im Tempel wieder und sagte zu ihm: »Du bist nun gesund geworden; sündige fortan nicht mehr, damit dir nicht noch Schlimmeres widerfährt!«

5:14 Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee.

5:15 Da ging der Mann hin und teilte den Juden mit, Jesus sei es, der ihn gesund gemacht habe.

5:15 The man went his way and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole.

5:16 Deshalb verfolgten die Juden Jesus, weil er solche Werke (auch) am Sabbat tat.

5:16 Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.

5:17 Jesus aber antwortete ihnen: »Mein Vater wirkt (ununterbrochen) bis zu dieser Stunde; darum wirke ich auch.«

5:17 But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work.

5:18 Deshalb trachteten die Juden ihm um so mehr nach dem Leben, weil er nicht nur den Sabbat brach, sondern auch Gott seinen eigenen Vater nannte und sich damit Gott gleichstellte.

5:18 Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God.

5:19 Daher sprach sich Jesus ihnen gegenüber so aus: »Wahrlich, wahrlich ich sage euch: der Sohn vermag von sich selber aus nichts zu tun, als was er den Vater tun sieht; denn was jener tut, das tut in gleicher Weise auch der Sohn.

5:19 Then Jesus answered and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner.

5:20 Denn der Vater hat den Sohn lieb und läßt ihn alles sehen, was er selbst tut; und er wird ihn noch größere Werke als diese sehen lassen, damit ihr euch wundert.

5:20 For the Father loveth the Son and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder.

5:21 Denn wie der Vater die Toten auferweckt und lebendig macht, ebenso macht auch der Sohn lebendig, welche er will.

5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will.

5:22 Denn auch der Vater ist es nicht, der jemand richtet; sondern er hat das Gericht ganz dem Sohne übertragen,

5:22 For neither does the Father judge any man: but hath given all judgment to the Son.

5:23 damit alle den Sohn ebenso ehren, wie sie den Vater ehren. Wer den Sohn nicht ehrt, ehrt auch den Vater nicht, der ihn gesandt hat.

5:23 That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father who hath sent him.

5:24 Wahrlich, wahrlich ich sage euch: Wer mein Wort hört und dem glaubt, der mich gesandt hat, der hat ewiges Leben und kommt nicht ins Gericht, sondern ist aus dem Tode ins Leben hinübergegangen.

5:24 Amen, amen, I say unto you that he who heareth my word and believeth him that sent me hath life everlasting: and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life.

5:25 Wahrlich, wahrlich ich sage euch: Es kommt die Stunde, ja sie ist jetzt schon da, wo die Toten die Stimme des Sohnes Gottes hören werden, und die, welche auf sie hören, werden leben.

5:25 Amen, amen, I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

5:26 Denn wie der Vater (das) Leben in sich selbst hat, so hat er auch dem Sohne verliehen, (das) Leben in sich selbst zu haben;

5:26 For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given to the Son also to have life in himself.

5:27 und er hat ihm Vollmacht gegeben, Gericht abzuhalten, weil er ein Menschensohn ist.

5:27 And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man.

5:28 Wundert euch nicht hierüber! Denn die Stunde kommt, in der alle, die in den Gräbern ruhen, seine Stimme hören werden,

5:28 Wonder not at this: for the hour cometh wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God.

5:29 und es werden hervorgehen: die einen, die das Gute getan haben, zur Auferstehung für das Leben, die anderen aber, die das Böse betrieben haben, zur Auferstehung für das Gericht.

5:29 And they that have done good things shall come forth unto the resurrection of life: but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.

5:30 Ich vermag nichts von mir selbst aus zu tun; nein, wie ich es (vom Vater) höre, so richte ich, und mein Gericht ist gerecht, weil ich nicht meinen Willen (durchzuführen) suche, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat.«

5:30 I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge. And my judgment is just: because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.

5:31 »Wenn ich über mich selbst Zeugnis ablege, so ist mein Zeugnis ungültig.

5:31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

5:32 (Nein) ein anderer ist es, der mit seinem Zeugnis für mich eintritt, und ich weiß, daß das Zeugnis, das er über mich ablegt, wahr ist.

5:32 There is another that beareth witness of me: and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

5:33 Ihr habt zu Johannes gesandt, und er hat Zeugnis für die Wahrheit abgelegt;

5:33 You sent to John: and he gave testimony to the truth.

5:34 ich aber nehme das Zeugnis von einem Menschen nicht an, sondern erwähne dies nur deshalb, damit ihr gerettet werdet.

5:34 But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved.

5:35 Jener war wirklich die Leuchte, die mit hellem Schein brannte; ihr aber wolltet euch nur eine Zeitlang an ihrem Lichtschein vergnügen.«

5:35 He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.

5:36 »Ich aber habe ein Zeugnis, das gewichtiger ist als das des Johannes; denn die Werke, die der Vater mir zu vollführen übertragen hat, eben die Werke, die ich vollbringe, bezeugen von mir, daß der Vater mich gesandt hat.

5:36 But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect, the works themselves which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me.

5:37 So ist also, der mich gesandt hat, der Vater selbst, mit seinem Zeugnis für mich eingetreten. Ihr habt weder seine Stimme jemals gehört noch seine Gestalt gesehen;

5:37 And the Father himself who hath sent me hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

5:38 und auch sein Wort habt ihr nicht als bleibenden Besitz in euch, weil ihr dem nicht glaubt, den er gesandt hat.

5:38 And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not.

5:39 Ihr durchforscht (wohl) die (heiligen) Schriften, weil ihr in ihnen ewiges Leben zu haben vermeint, und sie sind es auch wirklich, die von mir Zeugnis ablegen;

5:39 Search the scriptures: for you think in them to have life everlasting. And the same are they that give testimony of me.

5:40 aber trotzdem wollt ihr nicht zu mir kommen, um wirklich Leben zu haben.«

5:40 And you will not come to me that you may have life.

5:41 »Ehre von Menschen nehme ich nicht an,

5:41 I receive not glory from men.

5:42 vielmehr habe ich bei euch erkannt, daß ihr die Liebe zu Gott nicht in euch tragt.

5:42 But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you.

5:43 Ich bin im Namen meines Vaters gekommen, doch ihr nehmt mich nicht an; wenn ein anderer in seinem eigenen Namen kommt, den werdet ihr annehmen.

5:43 I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.

5:44 Wie könnt ihr zum Glauben kommen, da ihr Ehre voneinander annehmt, aber nach der Ehrung, die vom alleinigen Gott kommt, kein Verlangen tragt?

5:44 How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek?

5:45 Denkt nicht, daß ich euer Ankläger beim Vater sein werde! Nein, es ist (ein anderer) da, der euch anklagt, nämlich Mose, auf den ihr eure Hoffnung gesetzt habt.

5:45 Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust.

5:46 Denn wenn ihr Mose glaubtet, dann würdet ihr auch mir glauben; denn ich bin es, von dem er geschrieben hat.

5:46 For if you did believe Moses, you would perhaps believe me also: for he wrote of me.

5:47 Wenn ihr aber seinen Schriften nicht glaubt, wie solltet ihr da meinen Worten Glauben schenken?«

5:47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?
