3:1 Nun erging das Wort des HERRN an Jona zum zweitenmal folgendermaßen:

3:1 And the word of the Lord came to Jonas the second time saying:

3:2 »Mache dich auf, begib dich nach der großen Stadt Ninive und laß sie die Botschaft hören, die ich dir ansagen werde!«

3:2 Arise, and go to Ninive, the great city: and preach in it the preaching that I bid thee.

3:3 Da machte Jona sich auf den Weg und begab sich nach Ninive, wie der HERR ihm geboten hatte. Ninive war aber eine gewaltig große Stadt, deren Durchwanderung drei Tagereisen erforderte.

3:3 And Jonas arose, and went to Ninive, according to the word of the Lord: now Ninive was a great city of three days' journey.

3:4 So begann denn Jona eine Tagereise weit in die Stadt hineinzugehen und predigte dabei mit den Worten: »Noch vierzig Tage, dann ist Ninive zerstört!«

3:4 And Jonas began to enter into the city one day's journey: and he cried and said: Yet forty days and Ninive shall be destroyed.

3:5 Da glaubten die Einwohner von Ninive an Gott, riefen ein Fasten aus und legten Sackleinen an, klein und groß;

3:5 And the men of Ninive believed in God: and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least.

3:6 und als die Kunde davon zum König von Ninive gelangte, erhob er sich von seinem Thron, legte seinen Mantel ab, hüllte sich in ein Trauergewand und setzte sich in die Asche.

3:6 And the word came to the king of Ninive: and he rose up out of his throne, and cast away his robe from him, and was clothed in sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

3:7 Sodann ließ er in Ninive durch Ausruf bekanntmachen: »Auf Befehl des Königs und seiner Großen (wird folgende Verordnung erlassen): Menschen und Vieh, Rinder und Kleinvieh sollen durchaus nichts genießen; dürfen nicht auf die Weide gehen und kein Wasser trinken,

3:7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published in Ninive, from the mouth of the king and of his princes, saying: Let neither men nor beasts, oxen, nor sheep taste anything: let them not feed, nor drink water.

3:8 sondern sollen, sowohl Menschen als Vieh, in Sackleinen gekleidet sein und mit aller Macht zu Gott rufen und umkehren ein jeder von seinem bösen Wege und von dem Unrecht ablassen, das an seinen Händen klebt!

3:8 And let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth, and cry to the Lord with all their strength, and let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the iniquity that is in their hands.

3:9 Vielleicht tut es Gott dann doch noch leid, und er läßt von seinem lodernden Zorn ab, so daß wir nicht untergehen!«

3:9 Who can tell if God will turn, and forgive: and will turn away from his fierce anger, and we shall not perish?

3:10 Als nun Gott sah, was sie taten, daß sie nämlich von ihrem bösen Wege umkehrten, tat ihm das Unheil leid, das er ihnen angedroht hatte, und er ließ es nicht eintreten.

3:10 And God saw their works, that they were turned from their evil way: and God had mercy with regard to the evil which he had said that he would do to them, and he did it not.
