12:1 Als sich unterdessen eine Volksmenge von vielen Tausenden angesammelt hatte, so daß sie einander auf die Füße traten, begann er, zuerst zu seinen Jüngern zu sagen: »Hütet euch vor dem Sauerteig der Pharisäer, das heißt vor der Heuchelei! –

12:1 And when great multitudes stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

12:2 Nichts aber ist verhüllt, das nicht enthüllt werden wird, und nichts verborgen, was nicht bekannt werden wird.

12:2 For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed: nor hidden that shall not be known.

12:3 Daher wird alles, was ihr im Dunkeln geredet habt, im Licht (der Öffentlichkeit) gehört werden; und was ihr in den Kammern ins Ohr geflüstert habt, wird auf den Dächern ausgerufen werden.«

12:3 For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness shall be published in the light: and that which you have spoken in the ear in the chambers shall be preached on the housetops.

12:4 »Ich sage aber euch, meinen Freunden: Fürchtet euch nicht vor denen, die den Leib zwar töten, danach aber euch nichts weiter antun können!

12:4 And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do.

12:5 Ich will euch aber angeben, vor wem ihr euch zu fürchten habt: Fürchtet euch vor dem, der die Macht besitzt zu töten und dann auch noch in die Hölle zu werfen! Ja, ich sage euch: Vor diesem fürchtet euch! –

12:5 But I will shew you whom you shall fear: Fear ye him who, after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you: Fear him.

12:6 Verkauft man nicht fünf Sperlinge für zwei Kupferstücke? Und doch ist kein einziger von ihnen bei Gott vergessen.

12:6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

12:7 Nun sind aber (bei euch) sogar die Haare auf eurem Haupt alle gezählt. Fürchtet euch nicht: ihr seid mehr wert als viele Sperlinge!

12:7 Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows.

12:8 Ich sage euch aber: Wer sich zu mir vor den Menschen bekennt, zu dem wird sich auch der Menschensohn vor den Engeln Gottes bekennen;

12:8 And I say to you: Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God.

12:9 wer mich aber vor den Menschen verleugnet, der wird auch vor den Engeln Gottes verleugnet werden.«

12:9 But he that shall deny me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

12:10 »Und wer immer ein Wort gegen den Menschensohn ausspricht, der wird Vergebung finden; wer aber gegen den heiligen Geist eine Lästerung begeht, der wird keine Vergebung finden. –

12:10 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but to him that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven.

12:11 Wenn man euch aber vor die Synagogen und vor die Obrigkeiten und die Behörden stellt, so macht euch keine Sorge darüber, wie oder womit ihr euch verteidigen oder was ihr sagen sollt!

12:11 And when they shall bring you into the synagogues and to magistrates and powers, be not solicitous how or what you shall answer, or what you shall say.

12:12 Denn der heilige Geist wird euch in eben der Stunde lehren, was ihr sagen sollt.«

12:12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you must say.

12:13 Es sagte aber einer aus der Volksmenge zu ihm: »Meister, sage doch meinem Bruder, er solle die Erbschaft mit mir teilen!«

12:13 And one of the multitude said to him: Master, speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me.

12:14 Jesus aber antwortete ihm: »Mensch, wer hat mich zum Richter oder Erbschaftsteiler über euch bestellt?«

12:14 But he said to him: Man, who hath appointed me judge or divider over you?

12:15 Dann fuhr er fort: »Seht euch vor und hütet euch vor aller Habsucht! Denn wenn jemand auch Überfluß hat, so ist das Leben für ihn doch durch all sein Besitztum nicht gesichert.«

12:15 And he said to them: Take heed and beware of all covetousness: for a man's life doth not consist in the abundance of things which he possesseth.

12:16 Er legte ihnen dann folgendes Gleichnis vor: »Einem reichen Manne hatten seine Felder eine ergiebige Ernte gebracht.

12:16 And he spoke a similitude to them, saying: The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits.

12:17 Da überlegte er bei sich folgendermaßen: ›Was soll ich tun? Ich habe keinen Raum, meine Ernte unterzubringen.‹

12:17 And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

12:18 Dann sagte er: ›So will ich’s machen: Ich will meine Scheunen abreißen und größere bauen und dort meinen gesamten Ernteertrag und meine Güter unterbringen

12:18 And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns and will build greater: and into them will I gather all things that are grown to me and my goods.

12:19 und will dann zu meiner Seele sagen: Liebe Seele, du hast nun einen reichen Vorrat auf viele Jahre daliegen; gönne dir also Ruhe, iß und trink und laß dir’s wohl sein!‹

12:19 And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years. Take thy rest: eat, drink, make good cheer.

12:20 Aber Gott sprach zu ihm: ›Du Narr! Noch in dieser Nacht fordert man dir deine Seele ab; wem wird dann das gehören, was du aufgespeichert hast?‹

12:20 But God said to him: Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul of thee. And whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

12:21 So geht es jedem, der für sich selbst Schätze sammelt und nicht reich für Gott ist.«

12:21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich towards God.

12:22 Weiter sagte er zu seinen Jüngern: »Deshalb sage ich euch: Seid nicht besorgt um euer Leben, was ihr essen sollt, auch nicht um euren Leib, was ihr anziehen sollt!

12:22 And he said to his disciples: Therefore I say to you: Be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on.

12:23 Das Leben ist doch wertvoller als die Nahrung und der Leib wertvoller als die Kleidung.

12:23 The life is more than the meat: and the body is more than the raiment.

12:24 Sehet die Raben an: sie säen nicht und ernten nicht, sie haben keine Vorratskammern und keine Scheunen, und Gott ernährt sie doch. Wieviel mehr seid ihr doch wert als die Vögel!

12:24 Consider the ravens, for they sow not, neither do they reap, neither have they storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much are you more valuable than they?

12:25 Wer aber von euch vermöchte durch all seine Sorgen der Länge seiner Lebenszeit auch nur eine Spanne zuzusetzen?

12:25 And which of you by taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?

12:26 Wenn ihr also nicht einmal etwas ganz Geringes vermögt, wozu macht ihr euch da Sorge um das Übrige?

12:26 If then ye be not able to do so much as the least thing, why are you solicitous for the rest?

12:27 Sehet die Lilien an, wie sie weder spinnen noch weben, und doch sage ich euch: Auch Salomo in aller seiner Pracht ist nicht so herrlich gekleidet gewesen wie eine von diesen.

12:27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. But I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these.

12:28 Wenn nun Gott das Gras auf dem Felde, das heute steht und morgen in den Ofen geworfen wird, so kleidet: wieviel eher wird er es euch tun, ihr Kleingläubigen!

12:28 Now, if God clothe in this manner the grass that is to-day in the field and to-morrow is cast into the oven: how much more you, O ye of little faith?

12:29 So fragt denn auch ihr nicht ängstlich, was ihr essen und was ihr trinken sollt, und regt euch nicht darüber auf!

12:29 And seek not what you shall eat or what you shall drink: and be not lifted up on high.

12:30 Denn nach allen diesen Dingen trachten die Heidenvölker der Welt; euer Vater weiß ja, daß ihr dies bedürft.

12:30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek. But your Father knoweth that you have need of these things.

12:31 Trachtet vielmehr nach seinem Reich, dann wird euch dieses obendrein gegeben werden.

12:31 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his justice: and all these things shall be added unto you.

12:32 Fürchte dich nicht, du kleine Herde! Denn eurem Vater hat es gefallen, euch das Reich (Gottes) zu geben.

12:32 Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom.

12:33 Verkauft euren Besitz und gebt ihn als Almosen hin! Verschafft euch Geldbeutel, die sich nicht abnützen, einen Schatz, der nie zu Ende geht, im Himmel, wo kein Dieb hineinkommt und keine Motte etwas zernagt!

12:33 Sell what you possess and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which faileth not: where no thief approacheth, nor moth corrupteth.

12:34 Denn wo euer Schatz ist, da wird auch euer Herz sein.«

12:34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

12:35 »Laßt eure Hüften gegürtet sein und eure Lampen brennen!

12:35 Let your loins be girt and lamps burning in your hands.

12:36 Denn ihr sollt Leuten gleichen, die auf ihren Herrn warten, wann er vom Hochzeitsmahl heimkehren werde, um ihm, wenn er kommt und anklopft, sogleich zu öffnen.

12:36 And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.

12:37 Selig zu preisen sind solche Knechte, die der Herr bei seiner Rückkehr wachend antrifft! Wahrlich ich sage euch: Er wird sich das Gewand hochschürzen, wird sie sich zu Tische setzen lassen und herantreten, um sie zu bedienen.

12:37 Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you that he will gird himself and make them sit down to meat and passing will minister unto them.

12:38 Und mag er erst in der zweiten oder in der dritten Nachtwache kommen und sie so vorfinden: selig sind sie zu preisen!

12:38 And if he shall come in the second watch or come in the third watch and find them so, blessed are those servants.

12:39 Das aber seht ihr ein: Wenn der Hausherr wüßte, in welcher Stunde der Dieb kommt, so würde er keinen Einbruch in sein Haus zulassen.

12:39 But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch and would not suffer his house to be broken open.

12:40 Darum haltet auch ihr euch bereit, denn der Menschensohn kommt zu einer Stunde, in der ihr es nicht vermutet.«

12:40 Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not the Son of man will come.

12:41 Da fragte Petrus: »Herr, hast du dies Gleichnis nur für uns bestimmt oder auch für alle anderen?«

12:41 And Peter said to him: Lord, dost thou speak this parable to us, or likewise to all?

12:42 Der Herr antwortete: »Wer ist demnach der treue Haushalter, der kluge, den sein Herr über seine Dienerschaft setzen wird, damit er ihnen das gebührende Speisemaß zu rechter Zeit gebe?

12:42 And the Lord said: Who thinkest thou is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season?

12:43 Selig zu preisen ist ein solcher Knecht, den sein Herr bei seiner Rückkehr in solcher Tätigkeit findet.

12:43 Blessed is that servant whom, when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing.

12:44 Wahrlich ich sage euch: Über seine sämtlichen Güter wird er ihn setzen.

12:44 Verily I say to you, he will set him over all that he possesseth.

12:45 Wenn aber ein solcher Knecht in seinem Herzen denkt: ›Mein Herr kommt noch lange nicht!‹ und dann anfängt, die Knechte und Mägde zu schlagen, zu schmausen und zu zechen und sich zu betrinken:

12:45 But if that servant shall say in his heart: My Lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the men-servants and maid-servants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk:

12:46 so wird der Herr eines solchen Knechtes an einem Tage kommen, an dem er ihn nicht erwartet, und zu einer Stunde, die er nicht kennt; und wird ihn zerhauen lassen und ihm seinen Platz bei den Ungetreuen anweisen.

12:46 The lord of that servant will come in the day that he hopeth not, and at the hour that he knoweth not: and shall separate him and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers.

12:47 Ein solcher Knecht aber, der den Willen seines Herrn gekannt und doch nichts ausgeführt und nichts nach seinem Willen getan hat, wird viele Schläge erhalten;

12:47 And that servant, who knew the will of his lord and prepared not himself and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

12:48 wer dagegen seinen Willen nicht gekannt und Dinge getan hat, die Züchtigung verdienen, wird nur wenige Schläge erhalten. Wem aber viel gegeben ist, von dem wird auch viel gefordert werden, und wem viel anvertraut ist, von dem wird man auch um so mehr verlangen.«

12:48 But he that knew not and did things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes. And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more.

12:49 »Ich bin dazu gekommen, ein Feuer auf die Erde zu werfen, und was sollte ich lieber wünschen, als daß es schon brennte!

12:49 I am come to cast fire on the earth. And what will I, but that it be kindled?

12:50 Doch mit einer Taufe habe ich mich (vorher) noch taufen zu lassen, und wie ist mir so bange (und doch zugleich: wie drängt es mich), bis sie vollzogen ist!

12:50 And I have a baptism wherewith I am to be baptized. And how am I straitened until it be accomplished?

12:51 Meint ihr, ich sei gekommen, um Frieden auf die Erde zu bringen? Nein, sage ich euch, vielmehr Zwiespalt.

12:51 Think ye, that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, no; but separation.

12:52 Denn von nun an werden fünf, die in einem Hause wohnen, entzweit sein: drei werden gegen zwei und zwei gegen drei stehen,

12:52 For there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided: three against two, and two against three.

12:53 der Vater gegen den Sohn und der Sohn gegen den Vater, die Mutter gegen die Tochter und die Tochter gegen die Mutter, die Schwiegermutter gegen ihre Schwiegertochter und die Schwiegertochter gegen die Schwiegermutter.«

12:53 The father shall be divided against the son and the son against his father: the mother against the daughter and the daughter against her mother: the mother-in-law against the daughter-in-law and the daughter- in-law against her mother-in-law.

12:54 Dann sagte er auch noch zu der Volksmenge: »Wenn ihr Gewölk im Westen aufsteigen seht, dann sagt ihr sogleich: ›Es gibt Regen‹, und es kommt auch so;

12:54 And he said also to the multitudes: When you see a cloud rising from the west, presently you say: A shower is coming. And so it happeneth.

12:55 und wenn ihr den Südwind wehen seht, so sagt ihr: ›Es wird heiß werden‹, und es kommt auch so.

12:55 And when ye see the south wind blow, you say: There will heat. And it cometh to pass.

12:56 Ihr Heuchler! Das Aussehen der Erde und des Himmels versteht ihr richtig zu beurteilen; wie kommt es denn, daß ihr die gegenwärtige Zeit nicht richtig beurteilt?

12:56 You hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the heaven and of the earth: but how is it that you do not discern this time?

12:57 Warum könnt ihr auch nicht von euch selbst aus zu einem Urteil über das, was recht ist, gelangen?

12:57 And why, even of yourselves, do you not judge that which is just?

12:58 Denn wenn du mit deinem Widersacher vor Gericht gehst, so gib dir noch unterwegs Mühe, dich gütlich mit ihm abzufinden, damit er dich nicht etwa vor den Richter schleppt und der Richter dich dem Gerichtsdiener übergibt und der Gerichtsdiener dich ins Gefängnis wirft.

12:58 And when thou goest with thy adversary to the prince, whilst thou art in the way, endeavour to be delivered from him: lest perhaps he draw thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the exacter, and the exacter cast thee into prison.

12:59 Ich sage dir: du wirst von dort sicherlich nicht loskommen, bis du auch den letzten Heller bezahlt hast.«

12:59 I say to thee, thou shalt not go out thence until thou pay the very last mite.
