11:1 Als Jesus nun mit der Unterweisung seiner zwölf Jünger zu Ende gekommen war, zog er von dort weiter, um in ihren Städten zu lehren und zu predigen.

11:1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he passed from thence, to teach and to preach in their cities.

11:2 Als aber Johannes im Gefängnis von dem Wirken Christi hörte, sandte er durch seine Jünger Botschaft an ihn

11:2 Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him:

11:3 und ließ ihn fragen: »Bist du es, der da kommen soll, oder sollen wir auf einen andern warten?«

11:3 Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?

11:4 Jesus gab ihnen zur Antwort: »Geht hin und berichtet dem Johannes, was ihr hört und seht:

11:4 And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen.

11:5 Blinde werden sehend und Lahme gehen, Aussätzige werden rein und Taube hören, Tote werden auferweckt, und Armen wird die Heilsbotschaft verkündigt,

11:5 The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them.

11:6 und selig ist, wer an mir keinen Anstoß nimmt!«

11:6 And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me.

11:7 Als diese nun den Rückweg antraten, begann Jesus zu den Volksscharen über Johannes zu reden: »Wozu seid ihr damals in die Wüste hinausgezogen? Wolltet ihr euch ein Schilfrohr ansehen, das vom Winde hin und her bewegt wird?

11:7 And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind?

11:8 Nein; aber wozu seid ihr hinausgezogen? Wolltet ihr einen Mann in weichen Gewändern sehen? Nein; die Leute, welche weiche Gewänder tragen, sind in den Königsschlössern zu finden.

11:8 But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings.

11:9 Aber wozu seid ihr denn hinausgezogen? Wolltet ihr einen Propheten sehen? Ja, ich sage euch: einen Mann, der noch mehr ist als ein Prophet!

11:9 But what went you out to see? A prophet? Yea I tell you, and more than a prophet.

11:10 Denn dieser ist es, auf den sich das Schriftwort bezieht: ›Siehe, ich sende meinen Boten vor dir her, der dir den Weg vor dir her bereiten soll.‹

11:10 For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before my face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

11:11 Wahrlich ich sage euch: Unter den von Frauen Geborenen ist keiner aufgetreten, der größer wäre als Johannes der Täufer; doch der Kleinste im Himmelreich ist größer als er.

11:11 Amen I say to you, there hath not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

11:12 Aber seit den Tagen Johannes des Täufers bis jetzt bricht das Himmelreich sich mit Gewalt Bahn, und die, welche Gewalt anwenden, reißen es an sich.

11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away.

11:13 Denn alle Propheten und das Gesetz haben bis auf Johannes geweissagt,

11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John:

11:14 und wenn ihr es annehmen wollt: Er ist Elia, der da kommen soll.

11:14 And if you will receive it, he is Elias that is to come.

11:15 Wer Ohren hat, der höre!

11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

11:16 Mit wem soll ich aber das gegenwärtige Geschlecht vergleichen? Kindern gleicht es, die auf den öffentlichen Plätzen sitzen und ihren Gespielen zurufen:

11:16 But whereunto shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place.

11:17 ›Wir haben euch gepfiffen, doch ihr habt nicht getanzt; wir haben ein Klagelied angestimmt, doch ihr habt euch nicht an die Brust geschlagen!‹

11:17 Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned.

11:18 Denn Johannes ist gekommen, der nicht aß und nicht trank; da sagen sie: ›Er hat einen bösen Geist.‹

11:18 For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He hath a devil.

11:19 Nun ist der Menschensohn gekommen, welcher ißt und trinkt; da sagen sie: ›Seht, der Schlemmer und Weintrinker, der Freund der Zöllner und Sünder!‹ Und doch ist die Weisheit (Gottes) gerechtfertigt worden durch ihre Werke.«

11:19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.

11:20 Damals begann er gegen die Städte, in denen seine meisten Wunder geschehen waren, Drohworte zu richten, weil sie nicht Buße getan hatten:

11:20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein were done the most of his miracles, for that they had not done penance.

11:21 »Wehe dir, Chorazin! Wehe dir, Bethsaida! Denn wenn in Tyrus und Sidon die Wunder geschehen wären, die in euch geschehen sind, so hätten sie längst in Sack und Asche Buße getan.

11:21 Woe thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida: for if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, they had long ago done penance in sackcloth and ashes.

11:22 Doch ich sage euch: Es wird Tyrus und Sidon am Tage des Gerichts erträglicher ergehen als euch!

11:22 But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you.

11:23 Und du, Kapernaum, wirst doch nicht etwa bis zum Himmel erhöht werden? Nein, bis zur Totenwelt wirst du hinabgestoßen werden. Denn wenn in Sodom die Wunder geschehen wären, die in dir geschehen sind, so stände es noch heutigen Tages.

11:23 And thou Capharnaum, shalt thou be exalted up to heaven? thou shalt go down even unto hell. For if in Sodom had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in thee, perhaps it had remained unto this day.

11:24 Doch ich sage euch: Dem Lande Sodom wird es am Tage des Gerichts erträglicher ergehen als dir!«

11:24 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for thee.

11:25 Zu jener Zeit hob Jesus an und sagte: »Ich preise dich, Vater, Herr des Himmels und der Erde, daß du dies vor Weisen und Klugen verborgen und es Unmündigen geoffenbart hast;

11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones.

11:26 ja, Vater, denn so ist es dir wohlgefällig gewesen! –

11:26 Yea, Father: for so hath it seemed good in thy sight.

11:27 Alles ist mir von meinem Vater übergeben worden, und niemand erkennt den Sohn als nur der Vater, und niemand erkennt den Vater als nur der Sohn und der, welchem der Sohn ihn offenbaren will.«

11:27 All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.

11:28 »Kommt her zu mir alle, die ihr niedergedrückt und belastet seid: ich will euch Ruhe schaffen!

11:28 Come to me all you that labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you.

11:29 Nehmt mein Joch auf euch und lernt von mir; denn ich bin sanftmütig und von Herzen demütig: so werdet ihr Ruhe finden für eure Seelen;

11:29 Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: And you shall find rest to your souls.

11:30 denn mein Joch ist sanft, und meine Last ist leicht.«

11:30 For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.
