10:1 Unterdessen rechnete sein Vater Tobit täglich die Zeit nach, und als die für die Reise bestimmten Tage vorüber waren und er nicht zurückkam,

10:1 But as Tobias made longer stay upon occasion of the marriage, Tobias his father was solicitous, saying: Why thinkest thou doth my son tarry, or why is he detained there?

10:2 sagte er: »Sollte er etwa zurückgewiesen worden sein? oder sollte Gabael gestorben sein und niemand ihm das Geld geben wollen?«

10:2 Is Gabelus dead, thinkest thou, and no man will pay him the money?

10:3 So war er tief bekümmert.

10:3 And he began to be exceeding sad, both he and Anna his wife with him: and they began both to weep together, because their son did not return to them on the day appointed.

10:4 Seine Frau aber sagte zu ihm: »Unser Sohn ist tot; deswegen bleibt er so lange aus«; und sie begann um ihn zu weinen und rief aus:

10:4 But his mother wept and was quite disconsolate, and said: Woe, woe is me, my son; why did we send thee to go to a strange country, the light of our eyes, the staff of our old age, the comfort of our life, the hope of our posterity?

10:5 »Du machst mir Kummer, mein Kind, daß ich dich, das Licht meiner Augen, habe fortziehen lassen!«

10:5 We having all things together in thee alone, ought not to have let thee go from us.

10:6 Tobit aber sagte zu ihr: »Schweig und sorge dich nicht; er ist gesund!«

10:6 And Tobias said to her: Hold thy peace, and be not troubled, our son is safe: that man with whom we sent him is very trusty.

10:7 Doch sie erwiderte ihm: »Schweig und täusche mich nicht: mein Kind ist tot!« Und sie ging Tag für Tag an den Weg hinaus, auf dem er fortgegangen war; bei Tage nahm sie keine Nahrung zu sich, und nachts hörte sie nicht auf, ihren Sohn Tobias zu beweinen, bis die vierzehn Hochzeitstage vorüber waren, die er, wie Raguel ihn beschworen hatte, dort zubringen musste.

10:7 But she could by no means be comforted, but daily running out looked round about, and went into all the ways by which there seemed any hope he might return, that she might if possible see him coming afar off.

10:8 Schließlich aber sagte Tobias zu Raguel: »Laß mich ziehen, denn mein Vater und meine Mutter haben gewiß schon keine Hoffnung mehr, mich wiederzusehen«.

10:8 But Raguel said to his son-in-law: Stay here, and I will send a messenger to Tobias thy father, that thou art in health.

10:9 Da antwortete ihm sein Schwiegervater: »Bleibe bei mir, ich will zu deinem Vater schicken und ihm Nachricht über dein Ergehen geben lassen«.

10:9 And Tobias said to him: I know that my father and mother now count the days, and their spirit is grievously afflicted within them.

10:10 Doch Tobias entgegnete: »Nein, laß mich zu meinem Vater zurückkehren!«

10:10 And when Raguel had pressed Tobias with many words, and he by no means would hearken to him, he delivered Sara unto him, and half of all his substance in men-servants, and women-servants, in cattle, in camels, and in kine, and in much money, and sent him away safe and joyful from him,

10:11 Da stand Raguel auf, übergab ihm seine Frau Sara und die Hälfte seines Vermögens an Sklaven, Vieh und Geld,

10:11 Saying: The holy angel of the Lord be with you in your journey, and bring you through safe, and that you may find all things well about your parents, and my eyes may see your children before I die.

10:12 gab ihnen seinen Segen und entließ sie mit den Worten: »Der Gott des Himmels lasse es euch gut ergehen, bevor ich sterbe!« Weiter sagte er zu seiner Tochter: »Ehre deine Schwiegereltern, sie sind jetzt deine Eltern; möchte ich immer gute Kunde von dir vernehmen!« hierauf küßte er sie. Edna aber sagte zu Tobias: »Lieber Bruder! der Gott des Himmels wolle dich glücklich heimführen und mir vergönnen, noch Kinder von dir und meiner Tochter Sara zu sehen, damit ich mich freuen kann vor dem Herrn. Siehe, ich vertraue dir meine Tochter als ein Unterpfand an; betrübe sie nicht!«

10:12 And the parents taking their daughter kissed her, and let her go:

10:13 Darauf zog Tobias weg, indem er Gott für den glücklichen Verlauf seiner Reise pries; unter Segenswünschen verabschiedete er sich dann von Raguel und dessen Frau Edna.

10:13 Admonishing her to honour her father and mother-in-law, to love her husband, to take care of the family, to govern the house, and to behave herself irreprehensibly.
