18:1 And the Lord appeared to him in the vale of Mambre as he was sitting at the door of his tent, in the very heat of the day.

18:1 Dann erschien ihm der HERR bei den Terebinthen Mamres, während er gerade um die Zeit der Mittagshitze am Eingang seines Zeltes saß.

18:2 And when he had lifted up his eyes, there appeared to him three men standing near to him: and as soon as he saw them, he ran to meet them from the door of his tent, and adored down to the ground.

18:2 Als er nämlich aufblickte und hinsah, standen plötzlich drei Männer vor ihm. Kaum hatte er sie erblickt, da eilte er ihnen vom Eingang seines Zeltes aus entgegen, verneigte sich vor ihnen bis auf den Boden

18:3 And he said: Lord, if I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away from thy servant.

18:3 und sagte: »O Herr, wenn ich irgend Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden habe, so gehe doch nicht an deinem Knechte vorüber!

18:4 But I will fetch a little water, and wash ye your feet, and rest ye under the tree.

18:4 Man soll euch etwas Wasser bringen, damit ihr euch die Füße waschen könnt; dann ruht euch unter dem Baume aus,

18:5 And I will set a morsel of bread, and strengthen ye your heart, afterwards you shall pass on: for therefore are you come aside to your servant. And they said: Do as thou hast spoken.

18:5 und ich will euch etwas zu essen holen, damit ihr euch erquickt: danach mögt ihr weiterziehen; ihr seid doch nun einmal bei eurem Knecht vorübergekommen.« Sie antworteten: »Tu so, wie du gesagt hast!«

18:6 Abraham made haste into the tent to Sara, and said to her: Make haste, temper together three measures of flour, and make cakes upon the hearth.

18:6 Da eilte Abraham zu Sara ins Zelt und sagte: »Nimm schnell drei Maß Mehl, feines Mehl, knete es und backe Kuchen!«

18:7 And he himself ran to the herd, and took from thence a calf, very tender and very good, and gave it to a young man, who made haste and boiled it.

18:7 Dann eilte Abraham zu den Rindern, nahm ein zartes, gutes Kalb und übergab es dem Knechte; der mußte es schnell zubereiten.

18:8 He took also butter and milk, and the calf which he had boiled, and set before them: but he stood by them under the tree.

18:8 Dann holte er Sauermilch und süße Milch sowie das Kalb, das er hatte zubereiten lassen, und setzte es ihnen vor; er selbst aber bediente sie unter dem Baume, während sie aßen.

18:9 And when they had eaten, they said to him: Where is Sara thy wife? He answered: Lo she is in the tent.

18:9 Da fragten sie ihn: »Wo ist deine Frau Sara?« Er antwortete: »Drinnen im Zelt.«

18:10 And he said to him: I will return and come to thee at this time, life accompanying, and Sara, thy wife, shall have a son. Which when Sara heard, she laughed behind the door of the tent.

18:10 Da sagte jener: »Übers Jahr um diese Zeit will ich wieder zu dir kommen: dann wird deine Frau Sara einen Sohn haben.« Sara horchte aber am Zelteingang, der hinter ihm war.

18:11 Now they were both old, and far advanced in years, and it had ceased to be with Sara after the manner of women.

18:11 Abraham und Sara waren aber alt und hochbetagt, so daß Sara nach ihrer leiblichen Beschaffenheit keine Kinder mehr erwarten konnte.

18:12 And she laughed secretly, saying: After I am grown old, and my lord is an old man, shall I give myself to pleasure?

18:12 Darum lachte Sara in sich hinein und dachte: »Jetzt, nachdem ich verwelkt bin, sollte ich noch an Liebeslust denken? Und mein Eheherr ist ja auch ein Greis.«

18:13 And the Lord said to Abraham: Why did Sara laugh, saying: Shall I, who am an old woman, bear a child indeed?

18:13 Da sagte der HERR zu Abraham: »Warum hat denn Sara gelacht und denkt: ›Sollte ich alte Frau wirklich noch Mutter werden können?‹

18:14 Is there any thing hard to God? According to appointment I will return to thee at this same time, life accompanying, and Sara shall have a son.

18:14 Ist etwa für den HERRN irgend etwas unmöglich? Zu der genannten Zeit, übers Jahr, komme ich wieder zu dir: dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.«

18:15 Sara denied, saying: I did not laugh: for she was afraid. But the Lord said: Nay; but thou didst laugh.

18:15 Da leugnete Sara und sagte: »Ich habe nicht gelacht!«, denn sie fürchtete sich. Er aber entgegnete: »Doch, du hast gelacht!«

18:16 And when the men rose up from thence, they turned their eyes towards Sodom: and Abraham walked with them, bringing them on the way.

18:16 Nunmehr brachen die drei Männer von dort auf und schauten aus nach Sodom hinab, während Abraham mit ihnen ging, um ihnen das Geleit zu geben.

18:17 And the Lord said: Can I hide from Abraham what I am about to do:

18:17 Da dachte der HERR: »Soll ich vor Abraham geheimhalten, was ich zu tun vorhabe?

18:18 Seeing he shall become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth shall be blessed?

18:18 Abraham soll ja doch zu einem großen und mächtigen Volk werden, und in ihm sollen alle Völker der Erde gesegnet werden;

18:19 For I know that he will command his children, and his household after him, to keep the way of the Lord, and do judgment and justice: that for Abraham's sake, the Lord may bring to effect all the things he hath spoken unto him.

18:19 denn ich habe ihn dazu ausersehen, daß er seinen Söhnen und seinem ganzen Hause nach ihm ans Herz lege, den Weg des HERRN innezuhalten, indem sie Gerechtigkeit und Recht üben, damit der HERR für Abraham alles in Erfüllung gehen lasse, was er in bezug auf ihn verheißen hat.«

18:20 And the Lord said: The cry of Sodom and Gomorrha is multiplied, and their sin is become exceedingly grievous.

18:20 So sagte denn der HERR: »Das Geschrei über Sodom und Gomorrha ist gar groß geworden, und ihre Sünde ist wahrlich sehr schwer.

18:21 I will go down and see whether they have done according to the cry that is come to me; or whether it be not so, that I may know.

18:21 Darum will ich hinabgehen und zusehen, ob sie wirklich ganz so gehandelt haben, wie die lauten Klagen, die zu mir gedrungen sind, von ihnen melden, oder ob es sich nicht so verhält: ich will es erkunden.«

18:22 And they turned themselves from thence, and went their way to Sodom: but Abraham as yet stood before the Lord.

18:22 Hierauf wandten sich die (anderen beiden) Männer von dort weg und gingen auf Sodom zu, während Abraham noch vor dem HERRN stehenblieb.

18:23 And drawing nigh, he said: Wilt thou destroy the just with the wicked?

18:23 Da trat Abraham näher heran und sagte: »Willst du wirklich die Gerechten zugleich mit den Gottlosen wegraffen?

18:24 If there be fifty just men in the city, shall they perish withal? and wilt thou not spare that place for the sake of the fifty just, if they be therein?

18:24 Vielleicht gibt es fünfzig Gerechte innerhalb der Stadt: willst du die wirklich umkommen lassen und nicht lieber dem Orte vergeben um der fünfzig Gerechten willen, die in ihm sind?

18:25 Far be it from thee to do this thing, and to slay the just with the wicked, and for the just to be in like case as the wicked; this is not beseeming thee: thou who judgest all the earth, wilt not make this judgment.

18:25 Fern sei es von dir, so zu handeln, die Gerechten zusammen mit den Gottlosen ums Leben zu bringen, so daß es den Gerechten ebenso ergeht wie den Gottlosen: das sei fern von dir! Der Richter der ganzen Erde muß doch Gerechtigkeit üben!«

18:26 And the Lord said to him: If I find in Sodom fifty just within the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.

18:26 Da antwortete der HERR: »Wenn ich in Sodom fünfzig Gerechte innerhalb der Stadt finden sollte, so will ich dem ganzen Ort um ihretwillen vergeben.«

18:27 And Abraham answered, and said: Seeing I have once begun, I will speak to my Lord, whereas I am dust and ashes.

18:27 Darauf nahm Abraham wieder das Wort und sagte: »Ach siehe, ich habe es gewagt, zu dem Allherrn zu reden, obgleich ich nur Staub und Asche bin.

18:28 What if there be five less than fifty just persons? wilt thou for five and forty destroy the whole city: And he said: I will not destroy it, if I find five and forty.

18:28 Vielleicht fehlen an den fünfzig Gerechten noch fünf: willst du da wegen dieser fünf die ganze Stadt vernichten?« Er antwortete: »Nein, ich will sie nicht vernichten, wenn ich dort fünfundvierzig finde.«

18:29 And again he said to him: But if forty be found there, what wilt thou do? He said: I will not destroy it for the sake of forty.

18:29 Darauf fuhr Abraham fort, ihn nochmals anzureden, und sagte: »Vielleicht finden sich deren dort nur vierzig.« Jener erwiderte: »Ich will ihnen um der vierzig willen nichts tun.«

18:30 Lord, saith he, be not angry, I beseech thee, if I speak: What if thirty shall be found there? He answered: I will not do it, if I find thirty there.

18:30 Abraham sagte: »Möge doch der Allherr nicht zürnen, wenn ich nochmals rede: vielleicht finden sich dort nur dreißig.« Er antwortete: »Ich will ihnen nichts tun, wenn ich dort dreißig finde.«

18:31 Seeing, saith he, I have once begun, I will speak to my Lord: What if twenty be found there? He said: I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.

18:31 Er sagte weiter: »Siehe doch, ich habe es gewagt, zu dem Allherrn zu reden: vielleicht finden sich dort nur zwanzig.« Er antwortete: »Ich will sie schon um der zwanzig willen nicht vernichten.«

18:32 I beseech thee, saith he, be not angry, Lord, if I speak yet once more: What if ten shall be found there? And he said: I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.

18:32 Da sagte er: »Möge doch der Allherr nicht zürnen, wenn ich noch dies eine Mal rede: vielleicht finden sich dort nur zehn.« Er erwiderte: »Ich will sie schon um der zehn willen nicht vernichten.«

18:33 And the Lord departed, after he had left speaking to Abraham: and Abraham returned to his place.

18:33 Hierauf ging der HERR weg, nachdem er das Gespräch mit Abraham beendet hatte; Abraham aber kehrte nach Hause zurück.
