43:1 In the mean time the famine was heavy upon all the land.

43:1 Die Hungersnot lag aber schwer auf dem Lande.

43:2 And when they had eaten up all the corn, which they had brought out of Egypt, Jacob said to his sons: Go again, and buy us a little food.

43:2 Als nun das Getreide, das sie aus Ägypten geholt hatten, vollständig aufgezehrt war, sagte ihr Vater zu ihnen: »Zieht noch einmal hin und kauft uns etwas Getreide zur Nahrung!«

43:3 Juda answered: The man declared unto us with the attestation of an oath, saying: You shall not see my face, unless you bring your youngest brother with you.

43:3 Da antwortete ihm Juda: »Der Mann hat uns eindringlich gewarnt mit den Worten: ›Ihr dürft mir nicht mehr vor die Augen treten, wenn euer Bruder nicht bei euch ist!‹

43:4 If therefore thou wilt send him with us, we will set out together, and will buy necessaries for thee.

43:4 Willst du uns also unsern Bruder mitgeben, dann wollen wir hinabziehen und Lebensmittel für dich kaufen;

43:5 But if thou wilt not, we will not go: for the man, as we have often said, declared unto us, saying: You shall not see my face without your youngest brother.

43:5 willst du ihn aber nicht mitgehen lassen, so ziehen wir nicht hinab; denn der Mann hat uns gesagt: ›Ihr dürft mir nicht vor die Augen treten, wenn euer Bruder nicht bei euch ist!‹«

43:6 Israel said to them: You have done this for my misery, in that you told him you had also another brother.

43:6 Da sagte Israel: »Warum habt ihr mir das zuleide getan, dem Manne mitzuteilen, daß ihr noch einen Bruder habt?«

43:7 But they answered: The man asked us in order concerning our kindred: if our father lived: if we had a brother: and we answered him regularly, according to what he demanded: could we know that he would say: Bring hither your brother with you?

43:7 Sie antworteten: »Der Mann erkundigte sich genau nach uns und unserer Familie und fragte: ›Lebt euer Vater noch? Habt ihr noch einen Bruder?‹ Da haben wir ihm auf seine Fragen Auskunft gegeben. Konnten wir denn wissen, daß er verlangen würde: ›Bringt euren Bruder her‹?«

43:8 And Juda said to his father: Send the boy with me, that we may set forward, and may live: lest both we and our children perish.

43:8 Juda aber sagte zu seinem Vater Israel: »Laß den Knaben mit mir gehen; dann wollen wir uns auf den Weg machen und hinziehen, damit wir am Leben bleiben und nicht verhungern, weder wir selbst noch du und unsere Familien!

43:9 I take the boy upon me, require him at my hand: unless I bring him again, and restore him to thee, I will be guilty of sin against thee for ever.

43:9 Ich will Bürge für ihn sein; von meiner Hand sollst du ihn zurückfordern! Wenn ich ihn nicht wieder zu dir bringe und ihn dir nicht vor die Augen stelle, so will ich Zeit meines Lebens schuldbeladen vor dir dastehen!

43:10 If delay had not been made, we had been here again the second time.

43:10 Ja, hätten wir nicht so lange gezögert, gewiß, wir wären jetzt schon zweimal wieder zurückgekehrt.«

43:11 Then Israel said to them: If it must needs be so, do what you will: take of the best fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down presents to the man, a little balm, and honey, and storax, myrrh, turpentine, and almonds.

43:11 Da erwiderte ihnen ihr Vater Israel: »Wenn es denn sein muß, so macht es folgendermaßen: Nehmt von den besten Erzeugnissen des Landes etwas in euren Säcken mit und überbringt es dem Manne als Geschenk: etwas Mastixbalsam und etwas Honig, Gewürzkräuter und Ladanum, Pistaziennüsse und Mandeln!

43:12 And take with you double money, and carry back what you found in your sacks, lest perhaps it was done by mistake.

43:12 Außerdem nehmt an Geld den doppelten Betrag mit! Denn auch das Geld, das sich oben in euren Säcken wiedergefunden hat, müßt ihr wieder mit euch nehmen: vielleicht liegt ein Versehen vor.

43:13 And take also your brother, and go to the man.

43:13 Auch euren Bruder nehmt mit und macht euch auf den Weg und zieht wieder hin zu dem Manne!

43:14 And may my almighty God make him favourable to you: and send back with you your brother, whom he keepeth, and this Benjamin: and as for me I shall be desolate without children.

43:14 Der allmächtige Gott aber lasse euch Erbarmen bei dem Manne finden, daß er euren andern Bruder wieder mit euch ziehen läßt und auch Benjamin! Ich aber – wie ich einstmals kinderlos gewesen bin, so habe ich auch jetzt wieder keine Kinder!«

43:15 So the men took the presents, and double money, and Benjamin: and went down into Egypt, and stood before Joseph.

43:15 So nahmen denn die Männer das betreffende Geschenk und den doppelten Betrag an Geld mit sich, dazu auch den Benjamin, machten sich auf den Weg, zogen nach Ägypten hinab und traten vor Joseph.

43:16 And when he had seen them, and Benjamin with them, he commanded the steward of his house, saying: Bring in the men into the house, and kill victims, and prepare a feast: because they shall eat with me at noon.

43:16 Als nun Joseph den Benjamin bei ihnen sah, befahl er seinem Hausverwalter: »Führe die Männer ins Haus hinein, laß ein Schlachttier schlachten und richte zu, denn die Männer sollen zu Mittag bei mir speisen.«

43:17 He did as he was commanded, and brought the men into the house.

43:17 Der Mann tat, wie Joseph ihm befohlen hatte, und führte die Männer in Josephs Haus.

43:18 And they being much afraid, said there one to another: Because of the money, which we carried back the first time in our sacks, we are brought in: that he may bring upon us a false accusation, and by violence make slaves of us and our asses.

43:18 Da fürchteten sie sich, daß sie in das Haus Josephs geführt wurden, und dachten: »Wegen des Geldes, das vorigesmal wieder in unsere Säcke geraten ist, werden wir hineingeführt: man will sich auf uns stürzen, uns überwältigen und uns zu Sklaven machen samt unsern Eseln.«

43:19 Wherefore, going up to the steward of the house, at the door,

43:19 Darum traten sie an den Hausverwalter Josephs heran und redeten ihn noch am Eingang des Hauses so an:

43:20 They said: Sir, we desire thee to hear us. We came down once before to buy food:

43:20 »Bitte, mein Herr! Wir sind schon einmal hergekommen, um Lebensmittel zu kaufen.

43:21 And when we had bought, and were come to the inn, we opened our sacks, and found our money in the mouths of the sacks: which we have now brought again in the same weight.

43:21 Als wir dann aber in die Herberge gekommen waren und unsere Säcke öffneten, da fand sich das Geld eines jeden oben in seinem Sack, unser Geld in vollem Betrage. Darum haben wir es jetzt wieder mitgebracht,

43:22 And we have brought other money besides, to buy what we want: we cannot tell who put it in our bags.

43:22 haben aber auch noch anderes Geld bei uns, um Lebensmittel zu kaufen. Wir wissen nicht, wer uns damals unser Geld in unsere Säcke gelegt hat.«

43:23 But he answered: Peace be with you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks. For the money, which you gave me, I have for good. And he brought Simeon out to them.

43:23 Da antwortete jener: »Seid unbesorgt, ihr habt nichts zu fürchten! Euer Gott und eures Vaters Gott hat euch da heimlich einen Schatz in eure Säcke gelegt; euer Geld ist richtig an mich gekommen.« Dann führte er Simeon zu ihnen heraus.

43:24 And having brought them into the house, he fetched water, and they washed their feet, and he gave provender to their asses.

43:24 Hierauf ließ er die Männer in das Haus Josephs eintreten, gab ihnen Wasser zum Füßewaschen und ließ ihren Eseln Futter geben.

43:25 But they made ready the presents, against Joseph came at noon: for they had heard that they should eat bread there.

43:25 Sie legten aber das Geschenk zurecht und warteten dann, bis Joseph zur Mittagszeit kommen würde; sie hatten nämlich gehört, daß sie dort speisen sollten.

43:26 Then Joseph came in to his house, and they offered him the presents, holding them in their hands; and they bowed down with their face to the ground.

43:26 Als nun Joseph nach Hause gekommen war, brachten sie ihm das Geschenk, das sie bei sich hatten, ins Zimmer hinein und verneigten sich vor ihm bis zur Erde.

43:27 But he courteously saluting them again, asked them, saying: Is the old man your father in health, of whom you told me? Is he yet living?

43:27 Er begrüßte sie freundlich und fragte sie: »Geht es eurem alten Vater wohl, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt? Ist er noch am Leben?«

43:28 And they answered: Thy servant our father, is in health; he is yet living. And bowing themselves, they made obeisance to him.

43:28 Sie antworteten: »Deinem Knecht, unserm Vater, geht es wohl; ja, er ist noch am Leben.« Dabei verbeugten sie sich wiederholt tief.

43:29 And Joseph lifting up his eyes, saw Benjamin, his brother by the same mother, and said: Is this your young brother, of whom you told me? And he said: God be gracious to thee, my son.

43:29 Als er dann hinblickte und Benjamin, seinen Vollbruder, den Sohn seiner eigenen Mutter, sah, fragte er: »Ist dies euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt?« Dann fügte er hinzu: »Gott sei dir gnädig, mein Sohn!«

43:30 And he made haste, because his heart was moved upon his brother, and tears gushed out: and going into his chamber, he wept.

43:30 Hierauf aber brach Joseph schnell ab, denn sein Gefühl überwältigte ihn beim Anblick seines Bruders, so daß er weinen mußte; er ging deshalb ins Innengemach und weinte sich dort aus.

43:31 And when he had washed his face, coming out again, he refrained himself, and said: Set bread on the table.

43:31 Dann wusch er sich das Gesicht und kam wieder heraus, nahm sich zusammen und befahl: »Tragt das Essen auf!«

43:32 And when it was set on, for Joseph apart, and for his brethren apart, for the Egyptians also that ate with him apart, (for it is unlawful for the Egyptians to eat with the Hebrews, and they think such a feast profane):

43:32 Da trug man für ihn besonders auf und für sie besonders und auch für die Ägypter, die bei ihm speisten, besonders; denn die Ägypter dürfen nicht mit den Hebräern zusammen speisen, weil das für die Ägypter eine Verunreinigung sein würde.

43:33 They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his age. And they wondered very much;

43:33 Sie hatten aber ihre Plätze nach seiner Anweisung, vom Ältesten bis zum Jüngsten, genau nach ihrem Alter; darüber sahen sie sich einander verwundert an.

43:34 Taking the messes which they received of him: and the greater mess came to Benjamin, so that it exceeded by five parts. And they drank, and were merry with him.

43:34 Hierauf ließ er von den vor ihm stehenden Gerichten Anteile zu ihnen hintragen; es war aber dessen, was man Benjamin vorlegte, fünfmal so viel, als was man allen anderen vorlegte. Und sie tranken mit ihm und wurden guter Dinge.
