50:1 And when Joseph saw this, he fell upon his father's face, weeping and kissing him.

50:1 Da warf sich Joseph über seinen Vater hin, weinte über ihn gebeugt und küßte ihn.

50:2 And he commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father.

50:2 Hierauf befahl Joseph den Ärzten, die in seinem Dienst standen, seinen Vater einzubalsamieren; da balsamierten die Ärzte Israel ein.

50:3 And while they were fulfilling his commands, there passed forty days: for this was the manner with bodies that were embalmed, and Egypt mourned for him seventy days.

50:3 Darüber vergingen vierzig Tage; denn so lange Zeit ist zum Einbalsamieren erforderlich; und die Ägypter trauerten siebzig Tage lang um ihn.

50:4 And the time of the mourning being expired, Joseph spoke to the family of Pharao: If I have found favour in your sight, speak in the ears of Pharao:

50:4 Als dann die Zeit der Trauer um ihn vorüber war, sagte Joseph zu den Hofbeamten des Pharaos: »Wenn ich Gnade bei euch gefunden habe, so bringt doch folgendes zur Kenntnis des Pharaos:

50:5 For my father made me swear to him, saying: Behold I die; thou shalt bury me in my sepulchre which I have digged for myself in the land of Chanaan. So I will go up and bury my father, and return.

50:5 Mein Vater hat mir einen Eid abgenommen und mir geboten: ›Wenn ich tot bin, sollst du mich in meinem Grabe beisetzen, das ich mir im Lande Kanaan angelegt habe!‹ Deshalb möchte ich nun hinaufziehen, um meinen Vater zu begraben; dann kehre ich wieder zurück.«

50:6 And Pharao said to him: Go up and bury thy father according as he made thee swear.

50:6 Da ließ ihm der Pharao sagen: »Ziehe hinauf und begrabe deinen Vater, wie du ihm hast schwören müssen!«

50:7 So he went up, and there went with him all the ancients of Pharao's house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt.

50:7 So zog denn Joseph hin, um seinen Vater zu begraben, und mit ihm zogen alle Diener des Pharaos, die höchsten Beamten seines Hofes und alle Würdenträger des Landes Ägypten,

50:8 And the house of Joseph with his brethren, except their children, and their flocks and herds, which they left in the land of Gessen.

50:8 dazu die ganze Familie Josephs, seine Brüder und überhaupt die Angehörigen seines Vaters; nur ihre kleinen Kinder sowie ihr Kleinvieh und ihre Rinder ließen sie im Lande Gosen zurück.

50:9 He had also in his train chariots and horsemen: and it was a great company.

50:9 Ebenso zogen sowohl Wagen als auch Reiter mit ihm, so daß es ein gewaltiger Zug war.

50:10 And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is situated beyond the Jordan: where celebrating the exequies with a great and vehement lamentation, they spent full seven days.

50:10 Als sie nun nach Goren-Haatad, das jenseits des Jordans liegt, gekommen waren, veranstalteten sie dort eine große und sehr feierliche Totenklage, und (Joseph) stellte um seinen Vater eine siebentägige Leichenfeier an.

50:11 And when the inhabitants of Chanaan saw this, they said: This is a great mourning to the Egyptians. And therefore the name of that place was called, The mourning of Egypt.

50:11 Als nun die dort wohnenden Kanaanäer die Trauerfeier bei Goren-Haatad sahen, sagten sie: »Da findet eine ernste Trauerfeier der Ägypter statt«; daher gab man dem Ort den Namen ›Trauerfeier der Ägypter‹; er liegt jenseits des Jordans.

50:12 So the sons of Jacob did as he had commanded them.

50:12 Seine Söhne hielten es dann mit ihm so, wie er ihnen befohlen hatte:

50:13 And carrying him into the land of Chanaan, they buried him in the double cave, which Abraham had bought together with the field for a possession of a burying place, of Ehpron, the Hethite, over against Mambre.

50:13 sie brachten ihn nämlich in das Land Kanaan und bestatteten ihn in der Höhle auf dem Felde Machpela, welche (Höhle) Abraham samt dem Felde zum Erbbegräbnis von dem Hethiter Ephron gekauft hatte, östlich von Mamre.

50:14 And Joseph returned into Egypt with his brethren, and all that were in his company, after he had buried his father.

50:14 Hierauf kehrte Joseph, nachdem er seinen Vater bestattet hatte, nach Ägypten zurück, er und seine Brüder und alle, die mit ihm hinaufgezogen waren, um seinen Vater zu bestatten.

50:15 Now he being dead, his brethren were afraid, and talked one with another: Lest perhaps he should remember the wrong he suffered, and requite us all the evil that we did to him.

50:15 Als nun die Brüder Josephs sahen, daß ihr Vater tot war, sagten sie: »Wie nun, wenn Joseph feindselig gegen uns aufträte und uns all das Böse vergälte, das wir ihm zugefügt haben?«

50:16 And they sent a message to him, saying: Thy father commanded us before he died,

50:16 Darum sandten sie zu Joseph und ließen ihm sagen: »Dein Vater hat uns vor seinem Tode folgende Weisung gegeben:

50:17 That we should say thus much to thee from him: I beseech thee to forget the wickedness of thy brethren, and the sin and malice they practised against thee: we also pray thee, to forgive the servants of the God of thy father this wickedness. And when Joseph heard this, he wept.

50:17 ›So sollt ihr zu Joseph sagen: Ach bitte, vergib doch deinen Brüdern ihr Vergehen und ihre Verschuldung, daß sie so übel an dir gehandelt haben!‹ So vergib uns nun doch unser Vergehen; wir sind ja doch auch Knechte des Gottes deines Vaters!« Da weinte Joseph, als sie ihm das sagen ließen.

50:18 And his brethren came to him; and worshipping prostrate on the ground, they said: We are thy servants.

50:18 Hierauf gingen seine Brüder selbst hin, warfen sich vor ihm nieder und sagten: »Hier sind wir als deine Knechte!«

50:19 And he answered them: Fear not: can we resist the will of God?

50:19 Joseph aber antwortete ihnen: »Seid ohne Furcht! Denn stehe ich etwa an Gottes Statt?

50:20 You thought evil against me: but God turned it into good, that he might exalt me, as at present you see, and might save many people.

50:20 Ihr freilich hattet Böses gegen mich im Sinn, aber Gott gedachte es zum Guten zu wenden, um das auszuführen, was jetzt klar zutage liegt, nämlich um ein zahlreiches Volk am Leben zu erhalten.

50:21 Fear not: I will feed you and your children. And he comforted them, and spoke gently and mildly.

50:21 Fürchtet euch also nicht! Ich selbst werde euch und eure Kinder versorgen.« So tröstete er sie und redete ihnen freundlich zu.

50:22 So wohnte denn Joseph in Ägypten samt der ganzen Familie seines Vaters, und Joseph wurde 110 Jahre alt.

50:23 And he dwelt in Egypt with all his father's house; and lived a hundred and ten years. And he saw the children of Ephraim to the third generation. The children also of Machir, the sons of Manasses, were born on Joseph's knees.

50:23 Von Ephraim sah er Urenkel, und auch die Söhne Machirs, des Sohnes Manasses, wurden noch bei Lebzeiten Josephs geboren.

50:24 After which he told his brethren: God will visit you after my death, and will make you go up out of this land, to the land which he swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

50:24 Da sagte Joseph zu seinen Brüdern: »Ich stehe nun nahe vor dem Tode; Gott aber wird sich euer sicherlich gnädig annehmen und euch aus diesem Lande in das Land zurückführen, das er Abraham, Isaak und Jakob zugeschworen hat.«

50:25 And he made them swear to him, saying: God will visit you, carry my bones with you out of this place:

50:25 Hierauf ließ Joseph die Söhne Israels folgendes beschwören: »Wenn Gott sich (dereinst) euer gnädig annehmen wird, dann sollt ihr meine Gebeine von hier mitnehmen.«

50:26 And he died, being a hundred and ten years old. And being embalmed, he was laid in a coffin in Egypt.

50:26 Dann starb Joseph im Alter von 110 Jahren; man balsamierte ihn ein und legte ihn in Ägypten in einen Sarg.
