21:1 And when king Arad the Chanaanite, who dwelt towards the south, had heard this, to wit, that Israel was come by the way of the spies, he fought against them, and overcoming them carried off their spoils.

21:1 Als nun der kanaanäische König von Arad, der im Südland wohnte, die Kunde erhielt, daß die Israeliten auf dem Wege von Atharim heranzögen, griff er die Israeliten an und nahm einige von ihnen gefangen.

21:2 But Israel binding himself by vow to the Lord, said: If thou wilt deliver thus people into my hand, I will utterly destroy their cities.

21:2 Da legten die Israeliten ein Gelübde vor dem HERRN ab und versprachen: »Wenn du dieses Volk in unsere Gewalt gibst, so wollen wir an ihren Ortschaften den Bann vollstrecken.«

21:3 And the Lord heard the prayers of Israel, and delivered up the Chanaanite, and they cut them off and destroyed their cities: and they called the name of that place Horma, that is to say, Anathema.

21:3 Da erhörte der HERR die Bitte der Israeliten und gab ihnen die Kanaanäer preis. Man vollstreckte dann an ihnen und ihren Ortschaften den Bann und nannte die Stätte seitdem Horma.

21:4 And they marched from mount Hor, by the way that leadeth to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom. And the people began to be weary of their journey and labour:

21:4 Dann brachen sie vom Berge Hor auf in der Richtung nach dem Schilfmeer, um das Land der Edomiter zu umgehen. Unterwegs aber wurde das Volk mißmutig

21:5 And speaking against God and Moses, they said: Why didst thou bring us out of Egypt, to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, nor have we any waters: our soul now loatheth this very light food.

21:5 und erhob Anklage gegen Gott und gegen Mose: »Warum habt ihr uns aus Ägypten hierher geführt? Um uns in der Wüste sterben zu lassen? Es gibt hier ja weder Brot noch Wasser, und uns ekelt vor diesem erbärmlichen Brotzeug!«

21:6 Wherefore the Lord sent among the people fiery serpents, which bit them and killed many of them.

21:6 Da sandte der HERR feurige Schlangen unter das Volk; die bissen die Leute, so daß zahlreiche Israeliten starben.

21:7 Upon which they came to Moses, and said; We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and thee: pray that he may take away these serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

21:7 Da kam das Volk zu Mose und bekannte: »Wir haben gesündigt, daß wir Anklagen gegen den HERRN und gegen dich erhoben haben; lege Fürbitte beim HERRN ein, daß er uns von den Schlangen befreie!« Als Mose nun Fürbitte für das Volk einlegte,

21:8 And the Lord said to him: Make a brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: whosoever being struck shall look on it, shall live.

21:8 sagte der HERR zu ihm: »Fertige dir ein Schlangenbild an und befestige es an einer Stange; wer dann gebissen ist und es anschaut, soll am Leben bleiben.«

21:9 Moses therefore made a brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: which when they that were bitten looked upon, they were healed.

21:9 Da fertigte Mose eine eherne Schlange an und befestigte sie oben an einer Stange. Wenn nun eine Schlange jemanden gebissen hatte und er auf die eherne Schlange hinschaute, so blieb er am Leben.

21:10 And the children of Israel setting forwards camped in Oboth.

21:10 Darauf zogen die Israeliten weiter und lagerten bei Oboth.

21:11 And departing thence they pitched their tents in Jeabarim, in the wilderness, that faceth Moab toward the east.

21:11 Dann zogen sie von Oboth weiter und lagerten bei Ijje-Abarim in der Wüste, die vor dem Lande der Moabiter nach Osten liegt.

21:12 And removing from thence, they came to the torrent Zared:

21:12 Von dort zogen sie weiter und lagerten im Bachtal Sered.

21:13 Which they left and encamped over against Arnon, which is in the desert and standeth out on the borders of the Amorrhite. For Arnon is the border of Moab, dividing the Moabites and the Amorrhites.

21:13 Von dort zogen sie weiter und lagerten jenseits des Arnon, [der in der Wüste ist,] der im Lande der Amoriter entspringt; der Arnon bildet nämlich die Grenze Moabs zwischen den Moabitern und Amoritern.

21:14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord: As he did in the Red Sea, so will he do in the streams of Arnon.

21:14 Daher heißt es im Buch der Kriege des HERRN: »Waheb in Supha, dazu die Bachtäler des Arnon

21:15 The rocks of the torrents were bowed down that they might rest in Ar, and lie down in the borders of the Moabites.

21:15 und den Abhang der Bachtäler, der bis in die Gegend von Ar reicht und sich an die Grenze von Moab anlehnt.«

21:16 When they went from that place, the well appeared whereof the Lord said to Moses: Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

21:16 Von dort (zogen sie) dann nach Beer; das ist der Brunnen, den der HERR meinte, als er zu Mose sagte: »Versammle das Volk, damit ich ihm Wasser gebe.«

21:17 Then Israel sung this song: Let the well spring up. They sung thereto:

21:17 Damals sangen die Israeliten folgendes Lied: »Quill empor, o Brunnen! Singt ihm zu:

21:18 The well, which the princes dug, and the chiefs of the people prepared by the direction of the lawgiver, and with their staves. And they marched from the wilderness to Mathana.

21:18 ›O Brunnen, den Fürsten gegraben, den die Edlen des Volks erschlossen haben mit dem Zepter, mit ihren Stäben!‹« Aus der Wüste (zogen sie) dann nach Matthana,

21:19 From Mathana unto Nahaliel: from Nahaliel unto Bamoth.

21:19 von Matthana nach Nahaliel, von Nahaliel nach Bamoth,

21:20 From Bamoth, is a valley in the country of Moab, to the top of Phasga, which looked towards the desert.

21:20 von Bamoth in das Tal, das in der moabitischen Ebene liegt an der Höhe des Pisga, der auf die weite Einöde hinabblickt.

21:21 And Israel sent messengers to Sehon king of the Amorrhites, saying:

21:21 Darauf sandten die Israeliten Boten zu Sihon, dem König der Amoriter, und ließen ihm sagen:

21:22 I beseech thee that I may have leave to pass through thy land: we will not go aside into the fields or the vineyards, we will not drink waters of the wells, we will go the king's highway, till we be past thy borders.

21:22 »Gestatte uns den Durchzug durch dein Land! Wir wollen nicht auf die Äcker und in die Weinberge abbiegen, auch kein Wasser aus den Brunnen trinken; nein, wir wollen auf der Königsstraße ziehen, bis wir dein Gebiet durchzogen haben.«

21:23 And he would not grant that Israel should pass by his borders: but rather gathering an army, went forth to meet them in the desert, and came to Jasa and fought against them.

21:23 Aber Sihon gestattete den Israeliten den Durchzug durch sein Gebiet nicht, sondern sammelte sein gesamtes Kriegsvolk und zog den Israeliten in die Wüste entgegen; und als er nach Jahaz gekommen war, griff er die Israeliten an.

21:24 And he was slain by them with the edge of the sword, and they possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jeboc, and to the confines of the children of Ammon: for the borders of the Ammonites, were kept with a strong garrison.

21:24 Diese aber schlugen ihn mit der Schärfe des Schwertes und eroberten sein Land vom Arnon bis zum Jabbok, bis an das Land der Ammoniter; denn Jaser liegt an der Grenze des Ammoniterlandes.

21:25 So Israel took all his cities, and dwelt in the cities of the Amorrhite, to wit, in Hesebon, and in the villages thereof.

21:25 So nahmen denn die Israeliten alle dortigen Städte ein und ließen sich in allen Städten der Amoriter nieder, in Hesbon und allen dazugehörigen Ortschaften.

21:26 Hesebon was the city of Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, who fought against the king of Moab: and took all the land, that had been of his dominion, as far as the Arnon.

21:26 Denn Hesbon war die Hauptstadt des Amoriterkönigs Sihon; dieser hatte nämlich mit dem vorigen Könige der Moabiter Krieg geführt und ihm sein ganzes Land bis an den Arnon abgenommen.

21:27 Therefore it is said in the proverb: Come into Hesebon, let the city of Sehon be built and set up:

21:27 Darum singen die Dichter: Kommt nach Hesbon! Aufgebaut und befestigt werde die Stadt Sihons!

21:28 A fire is gone out of Hesebon, a flame from the city of Sehon, and hath consumed Ar of the Moabites, and the inhabitants of the high places of the Arnon.

21:28 Denn Feuer ging (einst) aus von Hesbon, eine Flamme von der Stadt Sihons; die fraß die Städte Moabs und verbrannte die Höhen am Arnon.

21:29 Woe to thee Moab: thou art undone, O people of Chamos. He hath given his sons to flight, and his daughters into captivity to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites.

21:29 Wehe dir, Moab! Dem Untergang geweiht bist du, Volk des Kamos, der seine Söhne zu Flüchtlingen gemacht hat und seine Töchter zu Gefangenen für Sihon, den Amoriterkönig.

21:30 Their yoke is perished from Hesebon unto Dibon, they came weary to Nophe, and unto Medaba.

21:30 Da haben wir (Moab) niedergeschossen, Hesbon ist verlorengegangen bis Dibon; da haben wir verwüstet bis Nophah: Feuer ging aus bis Medeba.

21:31 So Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorrhite.

21:31 Als sich nun die Israeliten im Lande der Amoriter festgesetzt hatten,

21:32 And Moses sent some to take a view of Jazer: and they took the villages of it, and conquered the inhabitants.

21:32 sandte Mose Männer aus, um Jaser auszukundschaften, und sie nahmen dann die Stadt und die dazugehörigen Ortschaften ein, und man vertrieb die dort ansässigen Amoriter.

21:33 And they turned themselves, and went up by the way of Basan, and Og the king of Basan came against them with all his people, to fight in Edrai.

21:33 Hierauf wandten sie sich und zogen in der Richtung nach Basan hinauf. Da rückte Og, der König von Basan, mit seinem gesamten Kriegsvolk ihnen nach Edrei entgegen, um ihnen eine Schlacht zu liefern.

21:34 And the Lord said to Moses: Fear him not, for I have delivered him and all his people, and his country into thy hand: and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, the inhabitant of Hesebon.

21:34 Der HERR aber sagte zu Mose: »Fürchte dich nicht vor ihm! Denn ich habe ihn mit seinem ganzen Volk und seinem Land in deine Gewalt gegeben: verfahre mit ihm so, wie du mit dem Amoriterkönig Sihon, der in Hesbon wohnte, verfahren bist.«

21:35 So they slew him also with his sons, and all his people, not letting any one escape, and they possessed his land.

21:35 Da erschlugen sie ihn nebst seinen Söhnen und seinem ganzen Kriegsvolk, so daß ihm auch nicht einer übrigblieb, der entronnen wäre, und nahmen sein Land in Besitz.
