22:1 And they went forward and encamped in the plains of Moab, over against where Jericho is situate beyond the Jordan.

22:1 Hierauf zogen die Israeliten weiter und lagerten in den Steppen der Moabiter jenseits des Jordans, Jericho gegenüber.

22:2 And Balac the son of Sephor, seeing all that Israel had done to the Amorrhite,

22:2 Als nun Balak, der Sohn Zippors, alles Unheil sah, das die Israeliten den Amoritern zugefügt hatten,

22:3 And that the Moabites were in great fear of him, and were not able to sustain his assault,

22:3 überkam die Moabiter eine große Angst vor dem Volk (Israel), weil es so zahlreich war, und sie empfanden ein Grauen vor den Israeliten.

22:4 He said to the elders of Madian: So will this people destroy all that dwell in our borders, as the ox is wont to eat the grass to the very roots. Now he was at that time king in Moab.

22:4 Da sagten die Moabiter zu den Ältesten der Midianiter: »Nun wird dieser Schwarm alles rings um uns her kahlfressen, wie die Rinder das Grün des Feldes abfressen!« Damals war aber Balak, der Sohn Zippors, König der Moabiter.

22:5 He sent therefore messengers to Balaam the son of Beor, a soothsayer, who dwelt by the river of the land of the children of Ammon, to call him, and to say: Behold a people is come out of Egypt, that hath covered the face of the earth, sitting over against me.

22:5 Dieser sandte Boten zu Bileam, dem Sohne Beors, nach Pethor, das am Euphratstrom liegt, ins Land seiner Volksgenossen, um ihn holen zu lassen, und ließ ihm sagen: »Da ist ein Volk aus Ägypten ausgezogen, das hat sich jetzt über das ganze Land ausgebreitet und sich mir gegenüber festgesetzt.

22:6 Come therefore, and curse this people, because it is mightier than I: if by any means I may beat them and drive them out of my land: for I know that he whom thou shalt bless is blessed, and he whom thou shalt curse is cursed.

22:6 So komm nun doch her und verfluche mir dieses Volk; denn mir ist es zu stark; vielleicht gelingt es mir dann, eine Niederlage unter ihnen anzurichten und es aus dem Lande zu vertreiben; denn ich weiß: wen du segnest, der ist gesegnet, und wem du fluchst, der ist verflucht.«

22:7 And the ancients of Moab, and the elders of Madian, went with the price of divination in their hands. And where they were come to Balaam, and had told him all the words of Balac:

22:7 Da machten sich die Ältesten der Moabiter samt den Ältesten der Midianiter, nachdem sie sich mit Wahrsagerlohn versehen hatten, auf den Weg, kamen glücklich bei Bileam an und teilten ihm das Anliegen Balaks mit.

22:8 He answered: Tarry here this night and I will answer whatsoever the Lord shall say to me. And while they stayed with Balaam, God came and said to him:

22:8 Er aber antwortete ihnen: »Bleibt diese Nacht hier, dann will ich euch Bescheid geben, je nachdem der HERR mir Weisung erteilt.« So blieben denn die Fürsten der Moabiter bei Bileam.

22:9 What mean these men that are with thee?

22:9 Da erschien Gott dem Bileam im Traum und fragte ihn: »Was sind das für Männer bei dir?«

22:10 He answered: Balac the son of Sephor king of the Moabites hath sent to me,

22:10 Bileam antwortete Gott: »Balak, der Sohn Zippors, der König der Moabiter, hat mir durch sie sagen lassen:

22:11 Saying: Behold a people that is come out of Egypt, hath covered the face of the land: come and curse them, if by any means I may fight with them and drive them away.

22:11 ›Da ist ein Volk, das aus Ägypten ausgezogen ist und sich über das ganze Land ausgebreitet hat. So komm nun her und verfluche es mir; vielleicht vermag ich dann den Kampf mit ihm aufzunehmen und es zu vertreiben.‹«

22:12 And God said to Balaam: Thou shalt not go with them, nor shalt thou curse the people: because it is blessed.

22:12 Gott aber sagte zu Bileam: »Du darfst nicht mit ihnen gehen! Du darfst das Volk nicht verfluchen; denn es ist gesegnet.«

22:13 And he rose in the morning and said to the princes: Go into your country, because the Lord hath forbid me to come with you.

22:13 Als Bileam nun am Morgen aufgestanden war, sagte er zu den Häuptlingen Balaks: »Kehrt in euer Land zurück; denn der HERR hat mir die Erlaubnis versagt, mit euch zu ziehen.«

22:14 The princes returning, said to Balac: Balaam would not come with us.

22:14 So machten sich denn die Häuptlinge der Moabiter auf den Weg, kehrten zu Balak zurück und berichteten ihm: »Bileam hat sich geweigert, mit uns zu gehen.«

22:15 Then he sent many more and more noble than he had sent before:

22:15 Da sandte Balak noch einmal Fürsten ab, die zahlreicher und vornehmer waren als die ersten.

22:16 Who, when they were come to Balaam, said: Thus saith Balac the son of Sephor, Delay not to come to me:

22:16 Als diese zu Bileam kamen, sagten sie zu ihm: »So läßt Balak, der Sohn Zippors, dir sagen: ›Weigere dich doch nicht, zu mir zu kommen!

22:17 For I am ready to honour thee, and will give thee whatsoever thou wilt: come and curse this people.

22:17 Denn ich will dich gar hoch ehren und alles tun, was du von mir verlangen wirst. So komm doch her und verfluche mir dieses Volk!‹«

22:18 Balaam answered: If Balac would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot alter the word of the Lord my God, to speak either more or less.

22:18 Bileam aber gab den Gesandten Balaks die Antwort: »Wenn Balak mir auch alles Silber und Gold geben wollte, soviel in seinen Palast geht, so vermöchte ich doch den Befehl des HERRN, meines Gottes, nicht zu übertreten, weder im Großen noch im Kleinen.

22:19 I pray you to stay here this night also, that I may know what the Lord will answer me once more.

22:19 Indessen – bleibt doch auch ihr diese Nacht hier, damit ich in Erfahrung bringe, was der HERR mir weiter zu sagen hat.«

22:20 God therefore came to Balaam in the night, and said to him: If these men be come to call thee, arise and go with them: yet so, that thou do what I shall command thee.

22:20 Da erschien Gott dem Bileam in der Nacht und sagte zu ihm: »Wenn die Männer gekommen sind, um dich zu holen, so mache dich auf und gehe mit ihnen; aber du darfst nur das tun, was ich dir sagen werde.«

22:21 Balaam arose in the morning, and saddling his ass went with them.

22:21 Da machte sich Bileam am Morgen auf, sattelte seine Eselin und machte sich mit den Häuptlingen der Moabiter auf den Weg.

22:22 And God was angry. And an angel of the Lord stood in the way against Balaam, who sat on the ass, and had two servants with him.

22:22 Da entbrannte aber der Zorn Gottes darüber, daß er sich aufgemacht hatte, und der Engel des HERRN stellte sich ihm in den Weg, um ihm feindlich entgegenzutreten, während er auf seiner Eselin dahinritt und zwei seiner Diener ihn begleiteten.

22:23 The ass seeing the angel standing in the way, with a drawn sword, turned herself out of the way, and went into the field. And when Balaam beat her, and had a mind to bring her again to the way,

22:23 Als nun die Eselin den Engel des HERRN sah, der mit gezücktem Schwert in der Hand ihm den Weg vertrat, bog sie vom Wege ab und ging ins Feld; da schlug Bileam die Eselin, um sie wieder auf den Weg zu bringen.

22:24 The angel stood in a narrow place between two walls, wherewith the vineyards were enclosed.

22:24 Hierauf stellte sich der Engel des HERRN in einem Hohlwege zwischen den Weinbergen auf, wo zu beiden Seiten eine Mauer war.

22:25 And the ass seeing him, thrust herself close to the wall, and bruised the foot of the rider. But he beat her again:

22:25 Als nun die Eselin den Engel des HERRN erblickte, drückte sie sich fest an die Mauer und preßte dabei den Fuß Bileams gegen die Mauer; da schlug er sie zum zweitenmal.

22:26 And nevertheless the angel going on to a narrow place, where there was no way to turn aside either to the right hand or to the left, stood to meet him.

22:26 Hierauf ging der Engel des HERRN nochmals eine Strecke weiter und blieb an einer engen Stelle stehen, wo ein Ausweichen nach rechts oder links unmöglich war.

22:27 And when the ass saw the angel standing, she fell under the feet of the rider: who being angry beat her sides more vehemently with a staff.

22:27 Als nun die Eselin den Engel des HERRN erblickte, legte sie sich unter Bileam auf den Boden nieder. Da geriet Bileam in Zorn, so daß er die Eselin mit dem Stock schlug.

22:28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said: What have I done to thee? Why strikest thou me, lo, now this third time?

22:28 Der HERR aber tat der Eselin den Mund auf, und sie sagte zu Bileam: »Was habe ich dir getan, daß du mich nun schon dreimal geschlagen hast?«

22:29 Balaam answered: Because thou hast deserved it, and hast served me ill: I would I had a sword that I might kill thee.

22:29 Bileam antwortete der Eselin: »Weil du mich zum besten gehabt hast! Hätte ich nur ein Schwert in der Hand, so hätte ich dich längst umgebracht!«

22:30 The ass said: Am not I thy beast, on which thou hast been always accustomed to ride until this present day? tell me if I ever did the like thing to thee. But he said: Never.

22:30 Da sagte die Eselin zu Bileam: »Bin ich nicht deine Eselin, auf der du zeit deines Lebens bis auf den heutigen Tag geritten bist? Ist es denn jemals meine Art gewesen, mich so gegen dich zu benehmen?« Er antwortete: »Nein.«

22:31 Forthwith the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel standing in the way with a drawn sword, and he worshipped him falling flat on the ground.

22:31 Nun tat der HERR dem Bileam die Augen auf, so daß er den Engel des HERRN auf dem Wege mit dem gezückten Schwert in der Hand stehen sah. Da verneigte er sich und warf sich auf sein Angesicht nieder.

22:32 And the angel said to him: Why beatest thou thy ass these three times? I am come to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse, and contrary to me:

22:32 Der Engel des HERRN aber sagte zu ihm: »Warum hast du deine Eselin nun schon dreimal geschlagen? Wisse wohl: ich habe mich aufgemacht, um dir feindlich entgegenzutreten; denn diese deine Reise ist unheilvoll und gegen meinen Willen.

22:33 And unless the ass had turned out of the way, giving place to me who stood against thee, I had slain thee, and she should have lived.

22:33 Die Eselin aber hat mich gesehen und ist alle drei Male vor mir ausgewichen; hätte sie das nicht getan, so hätte ich dich längst erschlagen, sie aber am Leben gelassen.«

22:34 Balaam said: I have sinned, not knowing that thou didst stand against me: and now if it displease thee that I go, I will return.

22:34 Da sagte Bileam zu dem Engel des HERRN: »Ich habe mich vergangen; ich wußte ja nicht, daß du mir auf dem Wege entgegenstandest. Nun aber will ich, wenn mein Vorhaben dir mißfällt, wieder umkehren!«

22:35 The angel said: Go with these men, and see thou speak no other thing than what I shall command thee. He went therefore with the princes.

22:35 Da antwortete der Engel des HERRN dem Bileam: »Gehe mit den Männern hin; aber du darfst nur das reden, was ich dir eingeben werde.« So zog nun Bileam mit den Häuptlingen Balaks weiter.

22:36 And when Balac heard it he came forth to meet him in a town of the Moabites, that is situate in the uttermost borders of Arnon.

22:36 Als nun Balak hörte, daß Bileam komme, zog er ihm bis Ar-Moab entgegen, das am Grenzfluß Arnon, an der äußersten Grenze seines Landes, lag.

22:37 And he said to Balaam: I sent messengers to call thee, why didst thou not come immediately to me? was it because I am not able to reward thy coming?

22:37 Da sagte Balak zu Bileam: »Habe ich nicht in angemessener Weise zu dir gesandt, um dich rufen zu lassen? Warum bist du nicht sofort zu mir gekommen? Meinst du vielleicht, ich sei nicht imstande, dich zu ehren?«

22:38 He answered him: Lo, here I am: shall I have power to speak any other thing but that which God shall put in my mouth?

22:38 Da antwortete ihm Bileam: »Ich bin jetzt ja doch zu dir gekommen; aber werde ich wohl irgend etwas kundtun können? Nur die Worte, die der HERR mir in den Mund legt, die werde ich kundtun.«

22:39 So they went on together, and came into a city, that was in the uttermost borders of his kingdom.

22:39 So ging denn Bileam mit Balak, bis sie nach Kirjath-Huzoth kamen.

22:40 And when Balac had killed oxen and sheep, he sent presents to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

22:40 Dort schlachtete Balak Rinder und Kleinvieh und schickte davon an Bileam und an die Fürsten, die bei ihm waren.

22:41 And when morning was come, he brought him to the high places of Baal, and he beheld the uttermost part of the people.

22:41 Am folgenden Morgen aber nahm Balak den Bileam mit sich und führte ihn nach Bamoth-Baal hinauf, von wo er den äußersten Teil des (israelitischen) Volkes sehen konnte.
