23:1 And Balaam said to Balac: Build me here seven altars, and prepare as many calves, and the same number of rams.

23:1 Da sagte Bileam zu Balak: »Baue mir hier sieben Altäre und stelle mir hier sieben junge Stiere und sieben Widder bereit.«

23:2 And when he had done according to the word of Balaam, they laid together a calf and a ram upon every altar.

23:2 Balak kam der Aufforderung Bileams nach, und beide opferten je einen Stier und einen Widder auf jedem Altar.

23:3 And Balaam said to Balac: Stand a while by thy burnt offering, until I go, to see if perhaps the Lord will meet me, and whatsoever he shall command, I will speak to thee.

23:3 Hierauf sagte Bileam zu Balak: »Bleibe du hier bei deinem Brandopfer stehen, während ich einen Gang mache; vielleicht kommt der HERR mir entgegen, und was immer er mir offenbart, das will ich dir kundtun.« Dann begab er sich auf eine kahle Anhöhe.

23:4 And when he was gone with speed, God met him. And Balaam speaking to him, said: I have erected seven altars, and have laid on everyone a calf and a ram.

23:4 Da kam Gott dem Bileam wirklich entgegen, und dieser sagte zu ihm: »Die sieben Altäre habe ich errichtet und auf jedem Altar einen jungen Stier und einen Widder geopfert.«

23:5 And the Lord put the word in his mouth, and said: Return to Balac, and thus shalt thou speak.

23:5 Da legte der HERR dem Bileam Worte in den Mund und gebot ihm: »Kehre zu Balak zurück und sprich so zu ihm!«

23:6 Returning he found Balac standing by his burnt offering, with all the princes of the Moabites:

23:6 Als er nun zu ihm zurückgekehrt war, stand jener immer noch neben seinem Brandopfer, er mit allen Häuptlingen der Moabiter.

23:7 And taking up his parable, he said: Balac king of the Moabites hath brought me from Aram, from the mountains of the east: Come, said he, and curse Jacob: make haste and detest Israel.

23:7 Da trug er seinen Spruch folgendermaßen vor: »Aus Aram hat Balak mich holen lassen, Moabs König von den Bergen des Ostens: ›Komm her, verfluche mir Jakob! ja komm, verwünsche Israel!‹ –

23:8 How shall I curse him, whom God hath not cursed? By what means should I detest him, whom the Lord detesteth not?

23:8 Wie soll ich den verfluchen, den Gott nicht verflucht? Und wie den verwünschen, den der HERR nicht verwünscht?

23:9 I shall see him from the tops of the rocks, and shall consider him from the hills. This people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

23:9 Ja, vom Felsengipfel erblicke ich es, und von den Höhen herab erschaue ich es; ein Volk zeigt sich mir, das für sich abgesondert wohnt und sich nicht zu den übrigen Völkern rechnet.

23:10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, and know the number of the stock of Israel? Let my soul die the death of the just, and my last end be like to them.

23:10 Wer könnte den Staub Jakobs zählen oder nur den vierten Teil Israels berechnen? Möchte ich doch den Tod dieser Gerechten sterben und mein Ende dem ihren gleichen!«

23:11 And Balac said to Balaam: What is this that thou dost? I sent for thee to curse my enemies: and thou contrariwise blessest them.

23:11 Da sagte Balak zu Bileam: »Was hast du mir da angetan! Um meine Feinde zu verfluchen, habe ich dich holen lassen, und nun hast du sie sogar gesegnet!«

23:12 He answered him: Can I speak any thing else but what the Lord commandeth?

23:12 Da gab jener ihm zur Antwort: »Ich muß doch das, was der HERR mir in den Mund legt, getreulich aussprechen!«

23:13 Balac therefore said: Come with me to another place from whence thou mayest see part of Israel, and canst not see them all: curse them from thence.

23:13 Nun sagte Balak zu ihm: »Komm doch mit mir an einen anderen Ort, von wo aus du (das Volk) sehen kannst; du siehst hier nur den äußersten Teil von ihm und kannst es nicht ganz überblicken; verfluche es mir dann von dort aus!«

23:14 And when he had brought him to a high place, upon the top of mount Phasga, Balaam built seven altars, and laying on every one a calf and a ram,

23:14 Hierauf nahm er ihn mit sich nach dem Späherfeld, auf den Gipfel des Pisga, baute dort sieben Altäre und opferte auf jedem Altar einen jungen Stier und einen Widder.

23:15 He said to Balac: Stand here by thy burnt offering while I go to meet him.

23:15 Dann sagte Bileam zu Balak: »Bleibe hier neben deinem Brandopfer stehen; ich aber will dort einer Kundgebung entgegengehen.«

23:16 And when the Lord had met him, and had put the word in his mouth, he said: Return to Balac, and thus shalt thou say to him.

23:16 Da kam der HERR dem Bileam entgegen, legte ihm Worte in den Mund und sagte: »Kehre zu Balak zurück und sprich so zu ihm!«

23:17 Returning he found him standing by his burnt sacrifice, and the princes of the Moabites with him. And Balac said to him: What hath the Lord spoken?

23:17 Als er nun zu ihm zurückgekehrt war, stand jener immer noch neben seinem Brandopfer, und die Häuptlinge der Moabiter waren bei ihm.

23:18 But he taking up his parable, said: Stand, O Balac, and give ear: hear, thou son of Sephor:

23:18 Als nun Balak ihn fragte: »Was hat der HERR gesagt?«, trug er seinen Spruch folgendermaßen vor: »Wohlan, Balak, höre zu! Leihe mir dein Ohr, Sohn Zippors!

23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor is the son of man, that he should be changed. Hath he said then, and will he not do? hath he spoken, and will he not fulfil?

23:19 Gott ist nicht ein Mensch, daß er lüge, noch ein Menschenkind, daß ihn etwas gereue: sollte er etwas sagen und es nicht ausführen? Sollte er etwas verheißen und es nicht erfüllen?

23:20 I was brought to bless, the blessing I am not able to hinder.

23:20 Siehe, zu segnen ist mir aufgetragen, und hat er gesegnet, so kann ich’s nicht ändern.

23:21 There is no idol in Jacob, neither is there an image god to be seen in Israel. The Lord his God is with him, and the sound of the victory of the king in him.

23:21 Man erblickt kein Unheil in Jakob und gewahrt kein Leid in Israel: der HERR, sein Gott, ist mit ihm, und Königsjubel erschallt in seiner Mitte.

23:22 God hath brought him out of Egypt, whose strength is like to the rhinoceros.

23:22 Gott, der sie aus Ägypten geführt, ist ihm wie die Hörner eines Wildstiers!

23:23 There is no soothsaying in Jacob, nor divination in Israel. In their times it shall be told to Jacob and to Israel what God hath wrought.

23:23 Ja, keine Zauberei haftet an Jakob und keine Beschwörung gegen Israel. Jetzt sagt man von Jakob und Israel: ›Wie Großes hat Gott vollführt!‹

23:24 Behold the people shall rise up as a lioness, and shall lift itself up as a lion: it shall not lie down till it devour the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.

23:24 Sieh, welch ein Volk! Es steht auf wie die Löwin und erhebt sich wie der Leu; es legt sich nicht nieder, ehe es Raub verzehrt und das Blut der Erschlagnen getrunken.«

23:25 And Balac said to Balaam: Neither curse, nor bless him.

23:25 Da sagte Balak zu Bileam: »Wenn du es nicht verfluchen willst, so brauchst du es doch nicht zu segnen!«

23:26 And he said: Did I not tell thee, that whatsoever God should command me, that I would do?

23:26 Bileam aber antwortete dem Balak: »Habe ich dir nicht bestimmt erklärt: Alles, was der HERR (mir) mitteilen wird, das werde ich tun?«

23:27 And Balac said to him: Come and I will bring thee to another place; if peradventure it please God that thou mayest curse them from thence.

23:27 Nun sagte Balak zu Bileam: »Komm, ich will dich an einen andern Ort mitnehmen; vielleicht gefällt es Gott dann, daß du mir das Volk von dort aus verfluchst.«

23:28 And when he had brought him upon the top of mount Phogor, which looketh towards the wilderness,

23:28 So nahm denn Balak den Bileam mit sich auf den Gipfel des Peor, der über die weite Einöde emporragt.

23:29 Balaam said to him: Build me here seven altars, and prepare as many calves, and the same number of rams.

23:29 Dort sagte Bileam zu Balak: »Baue mir hier sieben Altäre und stelle mir hier sieben junge Stiere und sieben Widder bereit.«

23:30 Balac did as Balaam had said: and he laid on every altar, a calf and a ram.

23:30 Balak kam der Aufforderung Bileams nach und opferte einen Stier und einen Widder auf jedem Altar.
