6:1 And Tobias went forward, and the dog followed him, and he lodged the first night by the river of Tigris.

6:1 Die beiden Reisenden kamen nun abends an den Fluß Tigris und übernachteten dort.

6:2 And he went out to wash his feet, and behold a monstrous fish came up to devour him.

6:2 Als nun der junge Mann ins Wasser stieg, um sich zu baden, sprang ein Fisch aus dem Strom und wollte ihn verschlingen.

6:3 And Tobias being afraid of him, cried out with a loud voice, saying: Sir, he cometh upon me.

6:3 Der Engel aber rief ihm zu: »Fasse den Fisch!« Da ergriff der junge Mann den Fisch und warf ihn ans Land.

6:4 And the angel said to him: Take him by the gill, and draw him to thee. And when he had done so, he drew him out upon the land, and he began to pant before his feet.

6:4 Hierauf sagte der Engel zu ihm: »Schneide den Fisch auf, nimm Herz, Leber und Galle heraus und hebe sie sorgfältig auf!«

6:5 Then the angel said to him: Take out the entrails of this fish, and lay up his heart, and his gall, and his liver for thee: for these are necessary for useful medicines.

6:5 Der junge Mann tat, wie der Engel ihm geboten hatte; den Fisch aber brieten und aßen sie. Beide zogen dann weiter, bis sie in die Nähe von Ekbatana kamen.

6:6 And when he had done so, he roasted the flesh thereof, and they took it with them in the way: the rest they salted as much as might serve them, till they came to Rages the city of the Medes.

6:6 Da fragte der junge Mann den Engel: »Bruder Asarja, was hat’s denn für eine Bewandtnis mit dem Herzen, der Leber und der Galle des Fisches?«

6:7 Then Tobias asked the angel, and said to him: I beseech thee, brother Azarias, tell me what remedies are these things good for, which thou hast bid me keep of the fish?

6:7 Er antwortete ihm: »Was Herz und Leber betrifft, so muß man sie, wenn ein Dämon oder böser Geist jemanden plagt, sei es ein Mann oder eine Frau, vor ihnen in Rauch aufgehen lassen, so werden sie nicht mehr geplagt.

6:8 And the angel, answering, said to him: If thou put a little piece of its heart upon coals, the smoke thereof driveth away all kind of devils, either from man or from woman, so that they come no more to them.

6:8 Die Galle aber dient dazu, daß man einen Menschen damit bestreiche, der weiße Flecken in den Augen hat; er wird dadurch geheilt werden«.

6:9 And the gall is good for anointing the eyes, in which there is a white speck, and they shall be cured.

6:9 Als sie sich dann Ekbatana näherten, sagte der Engel zu Tobias:

6:10 And Tobias said to him: Where wilt thou that we lodge?

6:10 »Bruder, heute werden wir bei Raguel übernachten; er ist dein Verwandter und hat eine Tochter namens Sara.

6:11 And the angel answering, said: Here is one whose name is Raguel, a near kinsman of thy tribe, and he hath a daughter named Sara, but he hath no son nor any other daughter beside her.

6:11 Ich will ihretwegen mit ihm reden, daß sie dir zur Frau gegeben werde; denn ihr Erbteil kommt dir zu, weil du der einzige bist, der zu ihrer Familie gehört, und das Mädchen ist schön und klug.

6:12 All his substance is due to thee, and thou must take her to wife.

6:12 Und nun höre mich an! Ich will mit ihrem Vater reden, und wenn wir aus Rages zurückgekehrt sind, wollen wir die Hochzeit feiern. Ich weiß, daß Raguel sie nach dem mosaischen Gesetz keinem andern Manne verheiraten kann, ohne des Todes schuldig zu sein; denn dir kommt die Erbschaft vor jedem andern zu«.

6:13 Ask her therefore of her father, and he will give her thee to wife.

6:13 Darauf sagte der junge Mann zu dem Engel: »Bruder Asarja, ich habe gehört, daß das Mädchen schon an sieben Männer verheiratet gewesen ist und daß sie alle im Brautgemach ums Leben gekommen sind.

6:14 Then Tobias answered, and said: I hear that she hath been given to seven husbands, and they all died: moreover I have heard, that a devil killed them.

6:14 Nun bin ich der einzige Sohn meines Vaters, und ich fürchte, wenn ich da hineingehe, daß ich auch sterben muß wie die früheren; denn es liebt sie ein Dämon, der keinem etwas zu leide tut außer denen, die sich ihr nahen. Und so fürchte ich auch sterben zu müssen und so das Leben meines Vaters und meiner Mutter mit Betrübnis über mich ins Grab zu bringen; und dann ist kein anderer Sohn für sie da, der sie begraben könnte«.

6:15 Now I am afraid, lest the same thing should happen to me also: and whereas I am the only child of my parents, I should bring down their old age with sorrow to hell.

6:15 Da antwortete ihm der Engel: »Denkst du denn nicht mehr an die Mahnung, die dein Vater an dich gerichtet hat, du möchtest eine Frau aus deiner Verwandtschaft nehmen? Höre mich nur an, mein Bruder: sie wird deine Frau werden. Um den Dämon mache dir keine Sorgen; noch heute Abend wird sie dir zur Frau gegeben werden.

6:16 Then the angel Raphael said to him: Hear me, and I will shew thee who they are, over whom the devil can prevail.

6:16 Wenn du dann ins Brautgemach eintrittst, nimmst du Glutasche von Räucherwerk, legst ein Stück von dem Herzen und von der Leber des Fisches darauf und räucherst damit.

6:17 For they who in such manner receive matrimony, as to shut out God from themselves, and from their mind, and to give themselves to their lust, as the horse and mule, which have not understanding, over them the devil hath power.

6:17 Sobald der Dämon das riecht, wird er die Flucht ergreifen und in alle Ewigkeit nicht wiederkommen. Wenn du dann zu ihr hingehst, so erhebt euch beide und ruft den barmherzigen Gott an; der wird euch bewahren und sich euer annehmen. Fürchte dich nicht, denn sie ist dir von jeher bestimmt gewesen, und du wirst sie retten. Sie wird dann mit dir ziehen, und ich zweifle nicht, daß du Kinder von ihr erhalten wirst«. Als Tobias dies vernahm, faßte er Liebe zu ihr und sein Herz neigte sich ihr innig zu.

6:18 But thou when thou shalt take her, go into the chamber, and for three days keep thyself continent from her, and give thyself to nothing else but to prayers with her.

6:19 And on that night lay the liver of the fish on the fire, and the devil shall be driven away.

6:20 But the second night thou shalt be admitted into the society of the holy Patriarchs.

6:21 And the third night thou shalt obtain a blessing that sound children may be born of you.

6:22 And when the third night is past, thou shalt take the virgin with the fear of the Lord, moved rather for love of children than for lust, that in the seed of Abraham thou mayst obtain a blessing in children.
