11:1 Da nahm Zophar von Naama das Wort und sagte:

11:1 Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:

11:2 »Soll (dieser) Wortschwall ohne Antwort bleiben und dieser Zungenheld recht behalten?

11:2 Shall not he that speaketh much, hear also? or shall a man full of talk be justified?

11:3 Dein Gerede sollte Männer zum Schweigen bringen, und du solltest höhnen dürfen, ohne von jemand widerlegt zu werden?!«

11:3 Shall men hold their peace to thee only? and when thou hast mocked others, shall no man confute thee?

11:4 Du hast ja doch behauptet: ›Meine Darlegung ist richtig‹, und: ›Ich stehe unsträflich in deinen Augen da!‹

11:4 For thou hast said: My word is pure, and I am clean in thy sight.

11:5 Ach, möchte Gott doch reden und seine Lippen gegen dich auftun

11:5 And I wish that God would speak with thee, and would open his lips to thee,

11:6 und dir die verborgenen Tiefen der Weisheit offenbaren, daß sie allseitig an wahrem Wissen sind! Dann würdest du erkennen, daß Gott dir einen Teil deiner Sündenschuld noch zugute hält.

11:6 That he might shew thee the secrets of wisdom, and that his law is manifold, and thou mightest understand that he exacteth much less of thee, than thy iniquity deserveth.

11:7 Kannst du den Urgrund der Gottheit erreichen oder bis zur Vollkommenheit des Allmächtigen vordringen?

11:7 Peradventure thou wilt comprehend the steps of God, and wilt find out the Almighty perfectly?

11:8 Himmelhoch ist sie – was kannst du denn erreichen? Tiefer als das Totenreich ist sie – wie weit reicht denn dein Wissen?

11:8 He is higher than heaven, and what wilt thou do? he is deeper than hell, and how wilt thou know?

11:9 Länger als die Erde ist ihr Maß und breiter als das Meer.

11:9 The measure of him is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

11:10 Wenn er daherfährt und in Verhaft nimmt und zur Gerichtsverhandlung ruft – wer will ihm da wehren?

11:10 If he shall overturn all things, or shall press them together, who shall contradict him?

11:11 Denn er kennt die nichtswürdigen Leute und nimmt das Unrecht wahr, ohne besonderer Aufmerksamkeit zu bedürfen.«

11:11 For he knoweth the vanity of men, and when he seeth iniquity, doth he not consider it?

11:12 »Da muß selbst ein Hohlkopf zu Verstand kommen und ein Wildeselfüllen zum Menschen umgeboren werden.

11:12 A vain man is lifted up into pride, and thinketh himself born free like a wild ass's colt.

11:13 Wenn du nun dein Herz in die rechte Verfassung setzen und deine Hände zu ihm ausbreiten wolltest –

11:13 But thou hast hardened thy heart, and hast spread thy hands to him.

11:14 klebt eine Schuld an deiner Hand, so entferne sie und laß in deinen Zelten kein Unrecht wohnen! –:

11:14 If thou wilt put away from thee the iniquity that is in thy hand, and let not injustice remain in thy tabernacle:

11:15 ja, dann könntest du dein Angesicht vorwurfsfrei erheben und würdest wie aus Erz gegossen dastehen, frei von aller Furcht;

11:15 Then mayst thou lift up thy face without spot, and thou shalt be steadfast, and shalt not fear.

11:16 ja, dann würdest du dein Leiden vergessen, würdest daran zurückdenken wie an Wasser, das sich verlaufen hat.

11:16 Thou shalt also forget misery, and remember it only as waters that are passed away.

11:17 Heller als der Mittag würde das Leben dir aufgehen; mag auch einmal Dunkel dich umgeben, wie lichter Morgen würde es werden.

11:17 And brightness like that of the noonday, shall arise to thee at evening: and when thou shalt think thyself consumed, thou shalt rise as the day star.

11:18 Du würdest dich dessen getrösten, daß noch Hoffnung vorhanden sei, und wenn du Umschau hieltest, getrost dich zum Schlafen niederlegen;

11:18 And thou shalt have confidence, hope being set before thee, and being buried thou shalt sleep secure.

11:19 du würdest dich lagern, ohne von jemand aufgeschreckt zu werden, und viele würden sich um deine Gunst bemühen.

11:19 Thou shalt rest, and there shall be none to make thee afraid: and many shall entreat thy face.

11:20 Dagegen die Augen der Frevler erlöschen: für sie ist jede Möglichkeit zum Entfliehen verloren, und ihre (einzige) Hoffnung ist – die Seele auszuhauchen!«

11:20 But the eyes of the wicked shall decay, and the way to escape shall fail them, and their hope the abomination of the soul.
