Ludger of Münster
Saint Ludger is venerated above all as patron of the diocese of Münster because he was its founder and first bishop: trained at Utrecht and at York under Alcuin, he evangelized the Frisians and Saxons, established his see at Münster, and governed it until his death in 809. His patronage is essentially territorial and personal — the gratitude of the local church to the apostle who first planted the faith and shaped its episcopal city. He is likewise honored at the abbey of Werden, which he founded, and across the lands of Westphalia and Frisia that he won for Christ.
Ludger was a Frisian missionary and the first Bishop of Münster. Educated in Utrecht and York under Alcuin, he spent years preaching among the Frisians and Saxons. He founded the abbey of Werden and established the diocese of Münster, where he served until his death in 809.
