In nómine Patris, et Fílii, et Spíritus Sancti. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Missa signo crucis incípitur, quod totum actum Sanctíssimae Trinitáti dévovet. The Mass begins with the Sign of the Cross, claiming the whole act for the Holy Trinity.

Introíbo ad altáre Dei.I will go in to the altar of God.

Ad Deum qui laetíficat juventútem meam.To God, who gives joy to my youth.

Antíphona Introíbo (ex Psalmo 42), quam sacérdos et miníster alternátim incípiunt: totus psalmus intra hanc antíphonam cantátur. The antiphon Introíbo (from Psalm 42), begun by priest and server in turn; the whole psalm is framed within it.

Júdica me, Deus,Judge me, O God,

et discérne causam meam de gente non sancta:and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy:

ab hómine iníquo et dolóso érue me.from the unjust and deceitful man deliver me.

Quia tu es, Deus, fortitúdo mea:For you are, O God, my strength:

quare me repulísti, why have you cast me off?

et quare tristis incédo, dum afflígit me inimícus?and why do I go sorrowful while the enemy afflicts me?

Emítte lucem tuam et veritátem tuam:Send forth your light and your truth:

ipsa me deduxérunt, they have led me

et adduxérunt in montem sanctum tuum, et in tabernácula tua.and brought me to your holy hill and into your tabernacles.

Et introíbo ad altáre Dei: ad Deum qui laetíficat juventútem meam. And I will go in to the altar of God: to God who gives joy to my youth.

Confitébor tibi in cíthara, Deus, Deus meus:I will praise you upon the harp, O God, my God:

quare tristis es, ánima mea,why are you sad, O my soul,

et quare contúrbas me?and why do you disquiet me?

Spera in Deo,Hope in God,

quóniam adhuc confitébor illi:for I will still give praise to Him:

salutáre vultus mei, et Deus meus.the salvation of my countenance and my God.

Psalmus 42 (Júdica me): anima, inter tristítiam et spem, ad altáre Dei tamquam ad fontem gáudii et lucis conténdit.Psalm 42 (Júdica me): the soul, between sorrow and hope, presses toward God's altar as toward the source of joy and light.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto.Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in saécula saeculórum. Amen.As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalmus doxología claúditur; deínde antíphona Introíbo repetítur, quae psalmum ínsigit et concludit. The psalm closes with the doxology (Glory be); the antiphon Introíbo is then repeated to seal it.

Introíbo ad altáre Dei.I will go in to the altar of God.

Ad Deum qui laetíficat juventútem meam.To God, who gives joy to my youth.

Adjutórium nostrum in nómine Dómini. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

Qui fecit caelum et terram.Who made heaven and earth.

Versículus Adjutórium nostrum: ante confessiónem culpae Ecclésia auxílium suum non in se, sed in nómine Dómini pónit. The versicle Adjutórium nostrum: before confessing sin, the Church places her help not in herself but in the name of the Lord.

Confíteor Deo omnipoténti, beátae Maríae semper Vírgini, beáto Michaéli Archángelo, beáto Joánni Baptístae, sanctis Apóstolis Petro et Paulo, ómnibus Sanctis, et vobis, fratres:I confess to God almighty, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, and to you, brethren:

quia peccávi nimis cogitatióne, verbo et ópere:that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed:

mea culpa, mea culpa, mea máxima culpa.through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.

Ideo precor beátam Maríam semper Vírginem, beátum Michaélem Archángelum, beátum Joánnem Baptístam, sanctos Apóstolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes Sanctos, et vos, fratres,Therefore I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Saints, and you, brethren,

oráre pro me ad Dóminum Deum nostrum.to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Confíteor sacerdótis: primum solus sacérdos culpam confitétur — Deo et univérsae cúriae caelésti, deínde ministris (et vobis, fratres), quos cum Sanctis pro se oráre implorat, péctore ter percússo (mea culpa). The priest's Confiteor: he confesses first, alone — to God and the whole court of heaven, then to the servers (and to you, brethren), whom with the saints he begs to pray for him, striking his breast thrice (mea culpa).

Misereátur tui omnípotens Deus,May almighty God have mercy on you,

et dimíssis peccátis tuis, and having forgiven you your sins,

perdúcat te ad vitam aetérnam.bring you to life everlasting.

Amen.Amen.

Respónsum ministrórum pro sacerdóte: Misereátur tui — miséricordiam Dei super illum implórant. The servers' response for the priest: Misereátur tui — they beg God's mercy upon him.

Confíteor Deo omnipoténti, beátae Maríae semper Vírgini, beáto Michaéli Archángelo, beáto Joánni Baptístae, sanctis Apóstolis Petro et Paulo, ómnibus Sanctis, et tibi, pater:I confess to almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, and to you, father:

quia peccávi nimis cogitatióne, verbo et ópere:that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed:

mea culpa, mea culpa, mea máxima culpa.through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.

Ideo precor beátam Maríam semper Vírginem, beátum Michaélem Archángelum, beátum Joánnem Baptístam, sanctos Apóstolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes Sanctos, et te, pater,Therefore I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Saints, and you, father,

oráre pro me ad Dóminum Deum nostrum.to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Confíteor ministrórum iísdem verbis, sed et tibi, pater pro vobis, fratres: confessio est mútua — sacérdos et minister alter pro áltero Dei misericórdiam implórant. The server's Confiteor in the same words, but and to you, father replaces and to you, brethren: the confession is mutual — priest and server each ask God's mercy for the other.

Misereátur vestri omnípotens Deus,May almighty God have mercy on you,

et dimíssis peccátis vestris, and having forgiven you your sins,

perdúcat vos ad vitam aetérnam.bring you to life everlasting.

Amen.Amen.

Indulgéntiam, absolutiónem et remissiónem peccatórum nostrórum tríbuat nobis omnípotens et miséricors Dóminus. Amen.Pardon, absolution, and remission of our sins may the almighty and merciful Lord grant us. Amen.

Sacérdos ministris Misereátur vestri respóndet, tum super omnes absolutiónem (Indulgéntiam) invocat — non sacramentálem, sed deprecatiónem véniae ante altáre.The priest answers the servers with Misereátur vestri, then over all invokes an absolution (Indulgéntiam) — not sacramental, but a plea for pardon before the altar.

Deus, tu convérsus vivificábis nos.O God, you will turn and bring us to life.

Et plebs tua laetábitur in te.And your people shall rejoice in you.

Osténde nobis, Dómine, misericórdiam tuam.Show us, O Lord, your mercy.

Et salutáre tuum da nobis. And your salvation grant us.

Dómine, exáudi oratiónem meam.O Lord, hear my prayer.

Et clamor meus ad te véniat. And let my cry to you come.

Dóminus vobíscum. The Lord be with you.

Et cum spíritu tuo.And with your spirit.

Versículi transitórii: absolutióne peráctae, sacérdos precatiónibus brévibus (ex Psalmis) ad altáre ascensúrum se párat, Dóminus vobíscum pópulum sécum coniúngens.Transitional versicles: the absolution done, the priest readies himself with brief prayers (from the Psalms) to ascend the altar, joining the people to himself with Dóminus vobíscum.

Orémus.Let us pray.

Aufer a nobis, quaésumus, Dómine, iniquitátes nostras:Take away from us, we beseech you, O Lord, our iniquities,

ut ad Sancta sanctórum puris mereámur méntibus introíre.that into the Holy of Holies with pure minds we may be worthy to enter.

Per Christum Dóminum nostrum.Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.Amen.

Ascéndens ad altáre sacérdos Aufer a nobis órat: mundítiam cordis petit ut in Sancta sanctórum — locum sacrifícii — dignus intret.Ascending to the altar the priest prays Aufer a nobis: he asks cleanness of heart to enter worthily the Holy of Holies — the place of sacrifice.

Orámus te, Dómine, per mérita Sanctórum tuórum,We beseech you, O Lord, by the merits of your Saints

quorum relíquiae hic sunt, whose relics here are,

et ómnium Sanctórum:and of all the Saints,

ut indulgére dignéris ómnia peccáta mea.that you would graciously forgive me all my sins.

Amen.Amen.

Altáre ósculans, sacérdos Sanctos quorum relíquiae in ara cláuduntur testes et intercessóres invocat: sic Praeparátio fine ad Introítum tránsit.Kissing the altar, the priest calls on the Saints whose relics are sealed in it as witnesses and intercessors; so the Preparation ends and the Introit begins.

Súscipe, sancte Pater, omnípotens aetérne Deus, hanc immaculátam hóstiam,Receive, O holy Father, almighty and eternal God, this spotless host,

quam ego indígnus fámulus tuus óffero tibi Deo meo vivo et vero, which I, your unworthy servant, offer to you, my living and true God,

pro innumerabílibus peccátis, et offensiónibus, et negligéntiis meis, for my innumerable sins, offences, and negligences,

et pro ómnibus circumstántibus, sed et pro ómnibus fidélibus christiánis vivis atque defúnctis:and for all here present, as also for all faithful Christians, living and dead,

ut mihi et illis profíciat ad salútem in vitam aetérnam.that to me and them it may profit for salvation to life everlasting.

Amen.Amen.

Prima oblátio: sacérdos hóstiam (panem) super paténam Deo elévat, sacrifícium totíus Missae praenúntians. The first oblation: the priest raises the host (the bread) on the paten to God, foretelling the sacrifice of the whole Mass.

Deus, qui humánae substántiae dignitátem mirabíliter condidísti, et mirabílius reformásti:O God, who the dignity of human nature wondrously founded, and still more wondrously restored it:

da nobis per hujus aquae et vini mystérium, ejus divinitátis esse consórtes, grant us, by the mystery of this water and wine, to be partakers of his divinity

qui humanitátis nostrae fíeri dignátus est párticeps, Jesus Christus Fílius tuus Dóminus noster.who of our humanity deigned to become partaker, Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.

Amen.Amen.

Dum guttam aquae vino miscet, sacérdos órat: aqua humanitátem nostram, vinum divinitátem Christi signat, quae in hoc mystério coniungúntur. As he mixes a drop of water with the wine, the priest prays: the water signs our humanity, the wine Christ's divinity, joined in this mystery.

Offérimus tibi, Dómine, cálicem salutáris, tuam deprecántes cleméntiam:We offer you, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching your mercy:

ut in conspéctu divínae majestátis tuae, pro nostra et totíus mundi salúte, cum odóre suavitátis ascéndat.that before your divine majesty, for our salvation and that of the whole world, with a sweet fragrance it may ascend.

Ut áudiam vocem laudis: et enárrem univérsa mirabília tua. That I may hear the voice of praise: and tell of all your wondrous works.

Dómine, diléxi decórem domus tuae: et locum habitatiónis glóriae tuae.O Lord, I have loved the beauty of your house: and the place where your glory dwells.

Ne perdas cum ímpiis, Deus, ánimam meam: et cum viris sánguinum vitam meam.Take not away with the wicked, O God, my soul: nor with men of blood my life.

sed ut testimónium perhibéret de lúmine.but was to give testimony of the light.

Erat lux vera,That was the true light,

quae illúminat omnem hóminem veniéntem in hunc mundum.which enlightens every man who comes into this world.

In mundo erat,In the world he was,

et mundus per ipsum factus est,and the world through him was made,

et mundus eum non cognóvit.and the world did not know him.

In própria venit,To his own he came,

et sui eum non recepérunt.and his own received him not.

Quotquot autem recepérunt eum,But to as many as received him,

dedit eis potestátem fílios Dei fíeri,he gave the power to become sons of God,

his qui credunt in nómine ejus:to those who believe in his name:

qui non ex sanguínibus, neque ex voluntáte carnis, neque ex voluntáte viri, sed ex Deo nati sunt.who not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God were born.

KneelET VERBUM CARO FACTUM EST,AND THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH,

et habitávit in nobis:and dwelt among us:

et vídimus glóriam ejus, and we saw his glory,

glóriam quasi Unigéniti a Patre, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father,

plenum grátiae et veritátis.full of grace and truth.

In fine Missae sacerdos prológum sancti Joánnis legit, mysterium Verbi incarnáti recolens; ad verba "ET VERBUM CARO FACTUM EST" omnes genuflectunt. At the end of Mass the priest reads the prologue of St John, recalling the mystery of the Word made flesh; at the words "AND THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH" all genuflect.
