Why this patronage

Saint Anne is the patroness of grandmothers, mothers, and pregnant women for the most natural of reasons: by tradition she is the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and so the grandmother of Jesus, the matriarch at the root of the Holy Family. Because tradition holds that she conceived Mary only after long years of childlessness, women longing for a child and those carrying one turn to her with particular trust. Her patronage of miners rests on a piece of pious symbolism: as the earth holds within it the precious vein of gold, so Anne bore within her the vein from which Mary, and through Mary Christ, would come — making her the figure of the hidden treasure drawn up out of the deep.

Life

Saint Anne is venerated as the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus Christ. Though not mentioned in the canonical Gospels, she is honored in early Christian tradition as a woman of great faith and patience, who together with her husband Joachim raised Mary in holiness.
