58:1 Unto the end, destroy not, for David for an inscription of a title, when Saul sent and watched his house to kill him. [1 Kings 19.]

58:2 Sprecht in Wahrheit ihr Recht, ihr Götter (= ihr Gewaltigen, ihr Machthaber auf Erden; vgl. 82,1)? Richtet ihr die Menschen gerecht?

58:2 For in your heart you work iniquity: your hands forge injustice in the earth.

58:3 Ach nein, im Herzen schmiedet ihr Frevel, im Lande wägen eure Hände Gewalttat dar.

58:3 The wicked are alienated from the womb; they have gone astray from the womb: they have spoken false things.

58:4 Abtrünnig sind die Gottlosen schon von Geburt an, schon vom Mutterleib an gehn die Lügenredner irre.

58:4 Their madness is according to the likeness of a serpent: like the deaf asp that stoppeth her ears:

58:5 Gift haben sie in sich wie Schlangengift, sie gleichen der tauben Otter, die ihr Ohr verstopft,

58:5 Which will not hear the voice of the charmers; nor of the wizard that charmeth wisely.

58:6 die nicht hört auf die Stimme der Beschwörer, (auf die Stimme) des kundigen Bannspruchredners.

58:6 God shall break in pieces their teeth in their mouth: the Lord shall break the grinders of the lions.

58:7 Zerschmettre ihnen, Gott, die Zähne im Munde, den jungen Löwen brich aus das Gebiß, o HERR!

58:7 They shall come to nothing, like water running down; he hath bent his bow till they be weakened.

58:8 Laß sie vergehen wie Wasser, das sich verläuft! Schießt er seine Pfeile ab: sie seien wie ohne Spitze!

58:8 Like wax that melteth they shall be taken away: fire hath fallen on them, and they shall not see the sun.

58:9 Wie die Schnecke beim Kriechen zerfließt, so muß er zergehn, wie die Fehlgeburt eines Weibes, die das Licht nicht geschaut!

58:9 Before your thorns could know the brier; he swalloweth them up, as alive, in his wrath.

58:10 Bevor noch eure Töpfe den (brennenden) Stechdorn spüren, wird ihn, noch unverbrannt, die Zornglut hinwegstürmen.

58:10 The just shall rejoice when he shall see the revenge: he shall wash his hands in the blood of the sinner.

58:11 Der Gerechte wird sich freun, daß er Rache erlebt, seine Füße wird er baden im Blute des Frevlers,

58:11 And man shall say: If indeed there be fruit to the just: there is indeed a God that judgeth them on the earth.

58:12 und die Menschen werden bekennen: »Fürwahr, der Gerechte erntet noch Lohn! Fürwahr, noch gibt’s einen Gott, der auf Erden richtet!«
