Lauda, Sion, Salvatórem,
O Sion, thy Redeemer praising,
lauda ducem et pastórem
Songs of joy to Him upraising,
in hymnis et cánticis.
Laud thy Pastor and thy Guide:
Quantum potes, tantum aude:
Swell thy notes most high and daring;
quia major omni laude,
For His praise is past declaring,
nec laudáre súfficis.
And thy loftiest powers beside.
Laudis thema speciális,
‘Tis a theme with praise that gloweth,
panis vivus et vitális
For the bread that life bestoweth
hódie propónitur.
Goes this day before us out;
Quem in sacræ mensa cenæ
Which, His holy supper taking,
turbæ fratrum duodénæ
To the brethren twelve His breaking
datum non ambígitur.
None hath ever called in doubt.
Sit laus plena, sit sonóra,
Full, then, be our praise and sounding,
sit jucúnda, sit decóra
Modest and with joy abounding
mentis jubilátio.
Be our mind’s triumphant state;
Dies enim sollémnis agitur,
For the festal’s prosecution,
in qua mensæ prima recólitur
When the first blest institution
hujus institútio.
Of this feast we celebrate.
In hac mensa novi Regis,
In the new King’s new libation,
novum Pascha novæ legis
In the new law’s new oblation,
Phase vetus términat.
Ends the ancient Paschal rite;
Vetustátem nóvitas,
Ancient forms new substance chaseth,
umbram fugat véritas,
Typic shadows truth displaceth,
noctem lux elíminat.
Day dispels the gloom of night.
Quod in cœna Christus gessit,
When He did at supper seated,
faciéndum hoc expréssit
Christ enjoined to be repeated,
in sui memóriam.
When His love we celebrate:
Docti sacris institútis,
Thus obeying His dictation,
panem, vinum in salútis
Blood and wine of our salvation,
consecrámus hóstiam.
We the victim consecrate.
Dogma datur Christiánis,
‘Tis for Christian faith asserted,
quod in carnem transit panis
Bread is into flesh converted,
et vinum in sánguinem.
Into blood the holy wine:
Quod non capis, quod non vides,
Sight and intellect transcending,
animosa fírmat fides,
Nature’s laws to marvel bending,
præter rerum órdinem.
‘Tis confirmed by faith divine.
Sub divérsis speciébus,
Under either kind remaining,
signis tantum, et non rebus,
Form, not substance, still retaining,
latent res exímiæ.
Wondrous things our spirit sees:
Caro cibus, sanguis potus:
Flesh and blood thy palate staining,
manet tamen Christus totus
Yet still Christ entire remaining,
sub utráque spécie.
Under either species.
A suménte non concísus,
All untorn for eating given,
non confráctus, non divísus:
Undivided and unriven,
ínteger accípitur.
Whole He’s taken and unrent;
Sumit unus, sumunt mille:
Be there one, or crowds surrounding,
quantum isti, tantum ille:
He is equally abounding,
nec sumptus consúmitur.
Nor, though eaten, ever spent.
Sumunt boni, sumunt mali
Both to good and bad ‘tis broken,
sorte tamen inæquáli,
But on each a different token
vitæ vel intéritus.
or of life, or death attends:
Mors est malis, vita bonis:
Life to good, to bad damnation;
vide, paris sumptiónis
Lo, of one same manducation
quam sit dispar éxitus.
How dissimilar the ends.
Fracto demum sacraménto,
When the priest the victim breaketh,
ne vacílles, sed meménto,
See thy faith in no wise shaketh,
tantum esse sub fragménto,
Know that every fragment taketh
quantum toto tégitur.
All that ‘neath the whole there lies:
Nulla rei fit scissúra:
This in Him no fracture maketh,
signi tantum fit fractúra:
‘Tis the figure only breaketh,
qua nec status nec statúra
Form, or state, no change there taketh
signáti minúitur.
Place in what it signifies.
Ecce panis Angelórum,
Bread, that angels eat in heaven,
factus cibus viatórum:
Now becomes the pilgrim’s leaven,
vere panis filiórum,
Bread in truth to children given,
non mitténdus cánibus.
That must ne’er to dogs be thrown.
In figúris præsignátur,
He, in ancient types disguised,
cum Isaac immolátur:
Was the Isaac sacrificed,
agnus paschæ deputátur:
For the feast a lamb devised,
datur manna pátribus.
Manna to the Fathers shown.
Bone pastor, panis vere,
Bread, whose shepherd-care doth tend us,
Jesu, nostri miserére:
Jesu Christ, Thy mercy send us,
tu nos pasce, nos tuére:
Do Thou feed us, Thou defend us,
tu nos bona fac vidére
Lead us where true joys attend us,
in terra vivéntium.
In the land where life is given:
Tu, qui cuncta scis et vales:
Thou all ken and might possessing,
qui nos pascis hic mortáles:
Mercies aye to us largessing,
tuos ibi commensáles,
Make us share Thy cup of blessing,
coherédes et sodáles
Heritage and love’s caressing
fac sanctórum cívium.
With the denizens of heaven.
Amen. Allelúja.
Amen. Alleluia.
