Norbert

Patron ofEucharistic Devotion, Premonstratensians, Bohemia
SituationsConversion, Eucharistic Devotion
ProfessionsPreachers, Religious
Why this patronage

Saint Norbert is the patron of Eucharistic devotion because the Blessed Sacrament was the center of his whole reform: as Archbishop of Magdeburg and founder of the Premonstratensians (Norbertines), he fought the eucharistic heresy of Tanchelm, who denied the Real Presence, restoring reverence for the Host and promoting frequent adoration — for which he is often depicted holding a monstrance. His order, the white-clad Premonstratensians, naturally claim him as their founder. He is honored as a patron of Bohemia because his relics were translated to the abbey of Strahov in Prague, where they rest to this day.

Life

Saint Norbert was a German nobleman who founded the Premonstratensian Order (Norbertines) around 1120. After a dramatic conversion experience during a lightning storm, he gave up his comfortable life, was ordained a priest, and became a wandering preacher. He later became Archbishop of Magdeburg and was known for his devotion to the Eucharist.
